Would it be safe to assume that the bow light was removed from certain boats at a certain time, such as going into a combat zone? I see numerous photos with boats having the bow light mounted on the bow fairlead (bull nose) and many without.
My PT 187 is depicted as at Morobe circa March 1943 and I can't find anything definitive regarding whether or not she wore this light.
Cheers!

Bob,
I'm pretty sure they removed them in the forward areas.

I don't know where this was taken but it seems to be missing in this shot:
It easily unbolted and the wire unplugged from a deck plug. Two less things to trip on!

I noticed that on the PT-61 (Elco 77) the bow light was on the forward deck. Sometime later, perhaps for the gunboat conversion, the light was moved and placed on the top of the superstructure just aft of the bridge and forward of the BMG tubs. I believe it became a mooring light. Lew

Interesting that 187 seems have an additional fairlead fitting on the chine instead of the normal one at the waterline, but it's difficult to make out what is going on there.
Best Regards,
Stu.

Ir sort of looks like a ropework fender but that doesn't really make sense to have one there.

Just some background on this photo, I met PT 187 crewman Gordon Goosela when he came to visit the PT658 3 years ago at the Lake Oswego Antique Car and Boat show. I gave Gordon a tour of the boat and he offered to let me photograph some of his photo prints that he had brought along with him to show us. I asked if he had a photo of the entire boat, and he said he only had the one he kept in his WALLET. So he took it out and let me photograph it as well. I believe it was taken in the PI in 1944-45. As you can see from the picture, the photo was pretty worn out but I feel fortunate that at least I asked to see the photo in the first place! I have not seen him since and do not know how he is doing today. If you want to see more pictures of the PT187, go to the NAVSOURCE page and they have them posted there.
Gordon Goosela at Helm of some type of vessel, not sure if it is the PT187 helm

Thanks gentlemen, and you too, Jeff (grin) for the into. I'll delete the bow light!
Cheers!

Always happy to help Bob!
Lots of nice 187 images on navsource thanks to Jerry, and Gordon of course: http://www.navsource.org/archives/12/05187.htm
This photo of the 187 underway seems to show the same object, like you pointed out Stu it's too high for the towing eye (which seems to be missing):
