New questions, please:
Were the rounded green helmets seen in many mid and late war photos in use in early 1942?
Would it be safe to assume they were not put on until General Quarters or Action Stations were sounded?
Can I also assume that life vests were in use at all times on patrol?
TIA

The helmets in use on the 34 were the M1917A1 helmets, which looked like the WWI style helmets.

Judging by available photographic evidence, helmets and life jackets were not worn every time the boats were underway, even in combat areas.

Will you are right. We wore life jackets and helmets only during the time that were at General Quarters. My helmet and life jacket was kept at my General Quarters station which was the port twin 50 cal. turret. In extremely rough weather we would be required to wear our life jackets. I have been in seas so rough that the boat would leave the water. The screws would come out of the water and the engines would rev up. You gladly wear a life jacket during that kind of weather. Our helmets were gray and not green color..

Yes, thanks everyone for your replies. Unless I hear otherwise. I will be making 1/350 scale WWI style helmets.

New question, gents....
Were the plexiglass turret covers in place all during PT-34's lifetime? Or were they removed at some point?
Again, TIA

They removed them as soon as the war began.
