Can somebody tell me the color(s) of PT 34 while in action in early 1942?
Thanks

Chuck,
I believe I've read that they overpainted the gray Ron 3 boats olive drab green, using mops as paintbrushes, sometime after they left Cavite...
I think Dr. Al Ross's Dad was in Ron 3 then, so he will correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks Drew,
I, too, am thinking it was green with a dark red lower hull.
Do you think the green was Army OD green, or do you think it was what was used later on in the Solomons?

Dad was the quartermaster on PT34. He told me decades ago that the got the green paint from a local hardware store and sloshed it on with mops. Just about any shade of darker green should be fine.

Chuck,
There's a good image of the Philippines-era PT 34, painted green, floating around on the internet. I saved it to my Pictures file, but I have trouble posting images on this site.
I did a Google image search for PT 34, and found the image I'm talking about.
Don't know how accurate the shade of green is, but...I would think its pretty close.

For those unfamiliar with Chuck's name, he is a world-class modeler, author, former hobby shop service adviser, raconteur, and a regulation-issue good guy. His 1/200 Trumpeter model of USS Arizona has won a host of awards including a Gold Medal and Best Miniature Award at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum at Manitowoc last May.
His lengthy and discerning article on the Arizona appeared in this Winter's issue of the Nautical Research Journal.
Welcome aboard, Chuckster!
Cheers!

Thank you, King of Kings, for that grotesquely exaggerated and totally unnecessary introduction.
And thank you, Dr. Ross, for that personal and enlightening reply.

Greetings Chuck and welcome to the forum
I trust this is the PT-34 image we're talking about?
Not sure if this is helpful but here is an example from period color photo of green applied in the field
What's amazing to me is how sun bleached the decks are.
Are you planning on building this boat?
Dave

Yes, Dave, this is the drawing I was going to use as a reference. And I have seen these photos before--perhaps they have appeared on my usual internet haunts.
I have the old 1/350 WEM resin kit of PT 34 and am planning on building it waterline. I didn't even realize there was a real PT 34 before I started my usual build research a couple of days ago.
Fortunately I have several books and references already but will keep looking and stay in touch here.
Thank you for your help, all.
