Hello all,
New guy (to the forum) here. My grandfather, Russell Joseph Klein, was in Ron 15 from May 12, 1944 until November 10, '44. Would anyone happen to know which boat he served aboard? He earned two battle stars on his ETO campaign ribbon (and I have a chest with "Russ Klein Ron 15" painted on it, but I have barely any information about his service in the med.
Any help would be very much appreciated. I would be happy to post photos of said chest.

My second interest is regarding his service in Ron 36 on board PT 527. He crossed the equator on the USAT Sea Cat on January 15, '45 (I have his crossing card) and I have a large amount of photos taken on and around Borneo (and possibly other places, including a shore base with some interior shots.) He was a S1c and S2c (RM) while with Ron 15, and came back to the states (on board USS Rexie) with an RM3c rating.

Are there any PT vets from Rons 15 or 36 on here? Or any radio operators? I am exceedingly interested in hearing more about what he experienced during his 2 years, 8 months, and 17 days in the USNR.

A bit of background about myself, I am a US Park Ranger at Fort McHenry in Baltimore, and so I work in the public history field. I spoke to Jim Chapman (Ron 36) who visited with an Honor Flight. Does anybody know if he's still around and kicking? I've sent him a few emails without response now...

In memory of my grandfather,
Russell Joseph Klein
RM3c, USNR
Ron 15 and Ron 36
PT 527

I will search my Ron 15 files for anything on your Grandfather. I did look at the old Peter Tare site ( which gives you Fred Rosen's Ron 15 History ) and didn't see his name. You can visit those through the ' PT BOAT LINKS' at the top of this page.

I would be interested in seeing a photo of his sea chest, as my Dad brought one back also, and I never knew if it was from the Med or from his Ron 23 days.

You might want to check in with Steve Stahley. His father was in Ron 15 before being transferred to Ron 27. BTW his father was also a radioman. Check out his blog in the links above too.

I looked a bit at the Muster Rolls in the Military collection on 'Ancestry' and through some of the Ron 15 records that I have, for anything on your Grandfather. I couldn't find any reference to what boat he would have been on, but that didn't surprise me. It's one of the hardest things to pin down. All I could find corraborated your information.

30June1944 he was S2c ( Ron 15 )
7October1944 rate changed to S1c
20October1944 transfer to Melville
10April1945 Rec from ComMTBRons, 7th Fleet Ron 36
30June1945 rate changed to RM3c

My wife's Grandfather, George Mullen was a PT Boat Commander for RON 36 PT 527. Over the past 10 years I have done a good bit of research with regard to his service, and I would gladly share what I have discovered. I would also be very interested in the pictures and information you might have of your Grandfather's service on PT 527. I have pictures I can share as well.

I very much look forward to your response.

Hello!

Very excited to FINALLY come in contact with another member of the crew! I misplaced my old password somehow, so I just created a new account. I have compiled a list of mission records, as well as the Squadron War Diary references to 527s movements during her time in theater. Basically, I'm trying to piece together the experiences of the crew through their photographs and the after action reports.

Anything you have to share will be greatly appreciated. I'm really interested in anything and everything pertaining to the 527.

Please feel free to send me a private message, and we can continue via email or somewhere else if it's more convenient.

My grandfather Russ was the Radio operator on board "Stork Club," and I have many images of him, and photos of pretty much everyone else on board. In all, I probably have about 100 or so photographs.

Thank you for getting back to me. I would certainly be willing to share the information and few photos that I have found. I would be very excited and appreciative of anything you might be willing to share. I am in Colorado. Where are you located?

I believe we might be able to upload photo's on this site. It sounds like you have a significant amount of information, so that might be daunting if you have not already converted your finds to a digital format.

Do you know if your Grandfather ever attended any PT Boat, RON36, PT527 reunions or maintained relations post WWII with any of his shipmates? If so where?

It has been quite a few years since I did my research, and will need to refresh my memory this weekend in terms of what I might have on hand.

Could you possibly share a picture or few of your Grandfather, perhaps with the PT527 crew so I can cross reference?

I can try to upload the few photo's I have scanned/digitized.

Apologies for rambling on here a bit. This is truly very exciting to hear from you.
