Been out of model making for years, decided to get back in a couple of years ago.

I purchased the revel 1/72 109, the Italieri 1/35 109 and 596... and they have been sitting untouched due to recent health issues. With spring coming soon, I am hoping to get the cars out of the garage and set up a space to get started finally.

I have the 37MM for the 1/72 109 and I think that will be the first one I do.

The Italieri 109 and 596 are for once I scrape away the rust and barnacles from my meager abilities.

I saw Steve Soberelski's PT 559 and I am interested in building that version. I know Steve scratch built a lot including the Elco Thunderbolt, but I just bought one from Shapeways for the future 559 project (from the 596). Has anyone else used that particular piece?

any other suggestions on converting the 596 to the 559 will be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, loads of great information available here. I have a question; what scale is the Thunderbolt Weapons system, and who is the designer? Shapeways I assume.

Yes, it was shapeways. It comes in 1/72 and 1/35.
I actually purchased 1 of each scale.

Welcome back to the hobby and to our forum as well Jeff,

The old Revell 109 kit is a good choice to brush your skills up on. I did want to let you know that Revell Germany is coming out with an update to this old kit. That should be in October. It will be an improvement over the current kit, but how much remains to be seen. I would expect to see something at the Nuremberg Toy Fair in February. We'll post some photos if that happens.

I'm guessing you bought the Thunderbolt from Game Miniatures on Shapeways? They are in FUD only I believe. Be sure to give them about a half hours time in the sun to make sure it is properly cured. This is a known issue with Shapeways parts. Also you'll want to give it a good cleaning. There are a couple of ways to go about doing that and Shapways forums have good recommendations for doing that. My favorite is to use baking soda through an air eraser. Others have had good success using an ultrasonic cleaner and soft brush.

I hope you enjoy your builds. We'll be happy to help you.
Dave

Thanks David, May I call you David?

I read the instructions for the FUD, and will follow them to the letter.

I have high hopes that these will come out about half as good as I have seen from others. IF I can achieve that I will be happy. I don't have half of the talent some of you all have.

I also just purchased a set of torpedo tubes and warhead ends in 1/72 from Shapeways.

Think Ill start with a British Vosper I have to shake the rust off

also considering an airbrush and maybe that air eraser you mentioned

May need some help in proper ways to thin certain paints.

Any ideas as to best way to do hull water lines?

Hi Jeff,
I use a purpose built tool for marking waterlines. If you search "waterline marking tool for model ships" you'll find a bunch of different options. It's important that the tool and the model be very stable. I would recommend painting the hull bottom. Then mark your waterline slightly above where you want it. Less than a millimeter. Then come back with a good striping tape and lay down your base line where you want it using the line as a guide. I use 1mm Micron Tape which I get from Hobby Link Japan. Then after your baseline is laid down you can cover the rest with larger tape.

Steve's 1/72 torpedo tubes from Shapeways are amazing. I've seen them in the flesh and they are a work of art.

Hi Jeff, I found that a laser plumb and level line is perfect for marking waterlines and also to check hull contours.
It is also invaluable for lining up superstructures and it won't break your budget.
(You can tell your wife that you're going to use it to line up perfectly all those pictures hanging in the living room)
In the second picture the bulk of waterline marine growth is added with acrilic gel directly on the projected laser line, clean and practical.
Greetings
