LEW AND ALL:
I am slowly tracking this story of a Ex-PT Boat being in my hometown from the 1950's to the early 1980's. Of course, I lived there only from age 1-4, we moved to what was called "American Venince" Lindernhurst, NY(a bit further east on the Great South Bay, in December 1967.

They only Ex-PT's that I know that worked out of the South Shore of Long Island were PT 309(Brand X) and PT 314(America/American Dreamer/Seneca Dreamer) and PT 459 (Fire Island supply boat/Beachcomber IV), so I am not sure what type or boat (ELCO, Higgins , Huckins, or Vosper), this might be until I can find an actual photo. Here are some info from the Long Island Memories page I am attached to:

Location of PT Boat at the former South Seas Yacht Club, Massapeaqua, NY, in the '70s.

here is what they remember:
One person wrote:
"My recollection of the PT boat was always seeing it from the foot of Block Blvd at Merrick Road. It was always visible from there until it moved. IIRC PT boats were made of plywood to keep them light and easily maneuverable so it must be pretty difficult keeping one in good shape".

Another wrote:
"This post is in regards to the PT boat. The last time I saw it was in the early 1980's and it was up in the weeds in Seaford at the end of Seamans Neck Rd. I believe in a marina called "Marina Del Mar" the ship was painted Tan and called the "Banshee". The marina was sold to a developer in the 1990's and was developed and called "Crescent Cove". Ship was in bad shape, stripped and rotting as I recall. I'm guessing it was cut up and destroyed."

a third person wrote:
"The Pt boat was indeed tan painted and was parked for years on the opposite side of Whitewood drive's Canal on the eastern side just south of Burns Park. The seaplane had a launch ramp just east of that canal directly on the bay."

Lew do you know anything of this boat, once called BANSHEE?
Take care,
TED

Ted,

The only PT Boat that I saw was at Howard Beach on the road to Rockaway Beach, on the south side of Long Island (NY), just west of JFK Airport. I can't be absolutely sure it was a PT Boat as I was in my early to mid teens in the mid to late 1950's.

Our family traveled to Rockaways once or twice each summer. I remembered it being a light colored hull with a small superstructure at first then seeing large sheets of bare plywood forming a new superstructure. This was in the turning basin on the north end of Shellbank Basin (Google Earth photo below). Saw it for several summers - but that is all I can remember.

Upon a Google search for "Pt Boat Howard Beach" I found:
http://www.howardbeach.com/Forum/tabid/77/forumid/10/postid/384/scope/posts/Default.aspx "Does anyone remember someone having an old PT boat on the canal between Crossbay and Old Howard beach? " & "I remember that big old green PT boat. It was anchored at the end of shellbank basin. It was there for as long as I can remember. I don't think I ever saw it go out. Later. there was another one near there...it was white, and was used as a fishing boat. "

http://www.howardbeach.com/GuestBook.aspx "Does anyone have a picture of the PT Boat that was docked in the 1960's in Shell Bank Basin. We use to dive off that boat."

http://www.noreast.com/DISCUSSION/ViewTopic.cfm?topic_ID=94311&page=6 "When I was growing up in Howard beach there was a PT or ASR on a mooring at teh north end of Shellbank Basin behind the bowling alley. The guns were removed and it was used as a boy scout trainer. That one became the Jess Lu. " (Ted, some other info on this page you may want to check out.)

I hope this helps.

Also found this:

http://forums.fishingunited.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=799&sid=f534955f7f37ed35053229bf2b187a55 ...We drove down the strip and the Jess Lu, Capt Jay Porter, was docked down by Maresca's and we got on. Now that was a boat, 85' PT or ASR. This is better. (This is where I'm supposed to post my fare ticket from another Captain II trip and my Jess Lu Big Fish Catcher button). The crew I believe was Bill Pappy who was a Freeport staple and an ace. Off in the dark we go and set the hook.

Lew;
What a bunch of cryptic statements! The white boat might have been PT 59, she didn't work out of the Bronx. or it might be PT 314, I know both worked out of Sheepshead Bay during season, in the 50's and 60's. Too bad the posts don't reflect a date. I have one more source I can check, my cousin Paul Ketcham, who owned Ketcham's Boatyard in Amityville. Paul and his late Dad were a fountain of south shore boat knowledge, all you had to do was mention a guys name or the boats name and they knew everything about it.
Take care,
TED
