Right, the lead boat is the 105 (as she is in most of those series of photos taken at that time), and I've seen the location listed as "off the Atlantic coast" or "off the U.S. East Coast, July 1942" in numerous sources.

Years ago I saw a photo of the 105 boat doctor'd to turn the 5 to a 9. No matter. Not much difference between the boats then if I recall.

Yep, me too, Dave (''Years ago I saw a photo of the 105 boat doctored to turn the 5 to a 9.").

And you're right, the Ron 5 boats, including the 109, would all look pretty much the same at the time the photos were taken.

Go to Navsource, and click on PT 105, you will see this photo. The series of photos were taken on 12 July 1942. Either on a formation training run off NY/NJ or on RON 5's run down to Norfolk, Va, just prior to being loaded and shipped to Panama.
There is a later series of photos that shows PT 103, 105. 107,108 underway refueling(UNREP) from USS Pocomoke (AV-9), enroute to Galapagos Islands from Panama. Some of these are under Navsource file PT 103,107, and 108. PT 109 and the Bryant Larson crew did not go on this NAVEX, because they (and PT 110-114) were already transferred to RON 2(22 September 1942). The original PT 109 Skipper, ENS. Jack Kempner, remained with RON 5, he later rose to RON 5 XO. PT 109 became RON 2 "flagship" with LT Rollin Westholm as Skipper. Larson remained as EXEC/CO of PT 109 until 20 April 1943.
Take care,
TED
