It's been a while since I was here. I finished a 1/72 Revell PT-109 but it was basically out of box. I am going to do another more politically correct this time.
I am going to do the 37MM cannon lashed to the fore deck and depth charges.
I am going to look into the Hasegawa Jeep and cannon kit to borrow the cannon for my build. I am not sure about depth charges. I can scratch build them I suppose, I believe they were Mk VI type, being 17.62 inches in diameter and 27.62 inches long. I think those are the correct dimensions. Is there any PE sets made for this kit? Thanks---John

Here's the boat I did back a few years. I am looking at a different shade of green, maybe a bit lighter and a different red for the hull bottom, Hull red by Tamiya looks good to me.I am now retired and have plenty of time to get it right or at least better this time.---John

Hi John and welcome back. I posted a long reply this morning but when I checked it didn't post for some reason. So let's try again....
I had a lot of fun modifying the Revell kit into PT-109. I thought I would share with you how I would probably approach it today. Any or all of these options may be of interest to you....
1) You can still get the White Ensign Models 1/72 PT Boat photo etch. Richard from Tom's now owns the company and it operates independently on its own web site which you can find here.https://www.whiteensignmodels.com/p/WEM+172+PT109+PE+7205/5398/#.WCpib3eZP64
Much of it I don't like but there are some good parts to it. For example the toe rails, hatches, fuel caps, deadeyes, creates, and wing nuts for back of the tubes. More on that later.
2) I highly recommend the 3D printed torpedo tubes and warheads that Steven (Model_Monkey) sells on his site at Shapeways. I've seen these in the flesh and they are a work of art. This is a major focal point of the model.
3) I used the 20mm Oerlikon and pedestal from John R Haynes. You can buy it from The Floating Drydock or buy direct from John in the UK. As an alternative there are several 20mm available through Shapeways by different designers.
4) If you don't want to mess with the photo etch depth charges Luis has designed some very nice ones. I have not seen these in the flesh but the CAD works looks very good. If somebody has these perhaps they can weigh in.
5) Our own Jeff Davidson also sells some really great parts on Shapeways. In 1/72 he offers eom beautifully rendered bits, marker lights, hatches, and vents.
6) I would also recommend the Aires .50 cal . They include flash hiders which the 109 definitely sported.
7) A lot of detail can be added with Evergreen plastic strip and card stock.
These are the major commercially available parts. Whatever you decide to do I hope you have a lot of fun with your build. Please share with us as well. If I can answer any questions please let me know.
Dave

David thanks for the information. I have retired since I last built the 1/72
Revell PT-109. I am now living in Fl and enjoying life. But I do have to watch myself due to the evil "fixed income". This new project so far cost me $7.50 on evil bay. A lot of the aftermarket is nice but I don't want to spent $200 on aftermarket parts for a $10 kit. Also I do a lot of scratch building. I had 3 years of drafting in high school and had my own drafting equipment back in the day. I spent 42 years as a fabricator in various machine and welding shops. So I am looking at some after market stuff but things like depth charge racks, depth charges, and other basic shape parts I can do with Evergreen card and tube.
I definitely do want to look into the ends for the torpedo tubes. I am still tossing around the idea of putting the mast on but in the lowered position, but then again
all the photos but one, and that was in Panama, show no mast. Thanks again for the help and I definitely will post my progress.---John

I have started work. The deck and hull are glued up. I need to do some sanding, filling then layout the waterline demarcation. I have already removed the balsa float mounts off the fore deck. I found a deal on the Hasegawa Jeep and 37MM cannon. I will donate the cannon minus the wheels to the deck of the 109. I have a lot of prep work and scratch building ahead.---John

I have the deck and hull filled and sanded. I then added the parts to make the cockpit, day cabin, engine cover hatches, and machine gun tubs. I also removed the forward foot rails where the depth charges will mount. Once my paint comes in I can add the rudders and shaft supports then mask and paint the lower hull.---John

I am still waiting for the paint to come in, so I did some detail painting on the stand.---John

Hi John,
Good luck on your Revell 109 kit. Looking forward to seeing the finished results.
You mentioned in one of your posts that "...all the photos but one, and that was in Panama, show no mast" on the 109.
I'd be interested to know where you found a verified photo of the 109 in Panama, as I don't think I've ever seen one of the boat there.
