I found an interesting fact in At Close Quarters regarding this Ron 24 boat. In an action fought April4/5, 1944, the 334 " fired 25 rounds from it's new 75mm
gun at shore batteries ". Apparently it was later removed in favor of the 40mm,
" which was faster firing and had tracer control ".

I wonder if the deck structure needed to be beefed up more than what was needed for a 40mm. I don't think I ever heard of a 75 mm on a PT. Anyone ever see a photo of this boat with the 75mm on board ?

( see ACQ, pp 237 ).

Steve;
Hi! I have not seen a photo, but it is also mentioned in US Small Combatants by Norman Friedman pg 170. "In Spring 1944, PT 334 was experimentally fitted on her stern with an aircraft type (M4) 75mm gun, the same mounted in B-25's (H model). This semiautomatic weapon weighted two-thirds as much as a 40mm gun. It appears not to have been successful. OPNAV rejected it, using BUSHIPS argument that it reprsente an excessive deck reaction load. (recoil damage) It remained attractive, , however, in early 1945, it was rejected again, because it could not be developed before the end of the war".(Friedman).
Take care,
TED
