Somebody asked when PT 105 was retrofitted with Roll-off racks and MK XIII torpedoes.
FYI, the RON 5 War Diary states in an entry dated "1200 to 2400 31 DEC 1943: item #7. Remarks on material and operational features: During December 1943, all boats of MTB RON FIVE were equipped with Mark 13, Mod.1 torpedoes with side-launching gear. Gyro Flux Gate Compass(Pioneer) was installed in all boats."
Take care,

Ted, Where do I find a copy of the RON5 War Diary? I've been trying to fill in the blanks in my father-in-laws service. He was assigned to RON5 from Dec 9, 1943 til Feb 1, 1945. I've found very little about that period that I can count on. Thanks for any help you may give.

Hi Rick,
I use the Fold3 website to access Ron war diaries. They have scanned the national archives records.
Cheers,
Andy

Rick;
Andy is correct. That is the gold mine for all War Diaries and Muster Reports. The War Diaries, while they are not complete, for the early Squadrons, they all show various boat movements and some include action reports. The Muster sheets will give you the date they(the individual man) reported onboard, were promoted, and when and where they were transferred to. Then you can go to the next commands muster sheets(if they are in Fold3), etc. If they came back to U.S. on a USN ship, and you know the name, you can also find that. It can be time consuming, but in the end, its worth it. In my research, it has become an invaluable tool.
Take care,

Earl;
Thanks for the heads up on Phil's film/photos as for Fold3, go to:
www.fold3.com
PT boat info is in WWll War Diaries(ie: Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 5), Navy Muster Reports, and there are a few PT after action reports under PT, but these are usually duplicated within the MTB RON war diary.
