Dear Forum, in my research on the images of PT boats at Mystic Seaports Rosenfeld collection I have found photos of PT 401 and up being launched. They are listed as being made by the Jacobs Boatyard in New York circa 1943 and then sent to the Soviet Union under lend lease. There are online sources e. g. NavSource that say these boats in the 401 and up range were made at the Annapolis MD boat yard. Does anyone know for sure who the manufacturer was? I know they were Vosper designs. Thanks, Lee

Lee;
Welcome aboard! PT 400-429 were built at Annapolis Boat Yard, and were completed between 1/17/1944-5/31/1944. All were sent to USSR.
Reference: U.S. Small Combatants, 1987, By Norman Friedman
Now as per NAVSOURCE and http://www.shipbuildinghistory.com/history/shipyards/6yachtsmall/jacob.htm
BPT 37(HM MTB 295) - BPT 42(HM MTB 300) were built at Robert Jacobs Shipyard, City Island, Bronx, NY between July-Nov 1942.
PT 384(HM MTB 396)-PT 399(HM MTB 411) were also built at Robert Jacobs Shipyard, City Island, Bronx, NY between 5/6/1944-10/30/1944.
Hope this helps.
Take care,
TED

Ted, thank you very much. The photos I work with show launching of PT 401 and 402 etc. but I can't identify the location. These Roaenfeld negatives list these images as being at the Jacobs yard in NY but most of the sources like NavSouce etc I could find do say they were built in Annanoplis MD. Thanks for your response. Lee

Hi Lee, I would be very interested in the pics you mention here. I think you might be referring to MTB 401 rather than PT 401. Apparently the Royal Navy numbers were already painted on the boats at Jacob's yard. I've got two Jacob's ads showing the Vospers with their RN numbers :
Navsource PT 389/MTB 401:

Yes, these are definitely RN MTBs. Had they been PT400, etc., they would have had the Higgins MK19Mod4 tubes, twin .50 turrets abaft the bridge, and the torpedo scallop in the forecastle would have been angular rather than curved. The pictured boats have the standard RN 21" tubes with combustion chambers.

Hi Al. I've tried an online search of the Rosenfeld collection but I haven't managed to find the pics of MTB 401 Lee mentioned. Perhaps someone could suggest the proper search words to find them ?

MTB 401 was exPT 389. Post-war, she ended up in the Italian Navy as MS 462. She was stricken in 1960.

Some years ago I found this nice pic from 1959. She had been fitted with a 2cm Breda gun on her foredeck and a captured German 2cm Flak Vierling midships.
