I am the daughter of a member of Ron 9. His name was Fredric (Fred)
Spaethe. He passed away in 1962. In one of his letters home to my mom, he mentions Leon E. Todd and how he was killed and how "Todd City" came into being. I have pictures of the rest of the guys on his boat,
even though I don't know what boat # that was. I am trying to compile a list of the men who were on that boat. I have mention of some names, not complete who were with him
Bob A
Rocky
Sandy
Mr. Darling
Ken
I know this doesn't help much. I have certainly enjoyed reading about my dad's painting the boat, over and over again. His work building roads through jungles, the fighting overhead with those zeros and much more.

Ms. Spaethe,

Did your Dad ever mention what COLOR he painted his boat, over and over?

Mainly owing to the lack of period color photos and the passage of time, the colors the various PT squadron's boats were painted at various times (mostly different shades of solid gray, solid green, and mixed camouflage colors) in the forward (combat) areas during WWII is still a subject of great interest (and debate) among historians and enthusiasts to this day.

Hopefully, you can post some of your Dad's photos on the site.

No he didn't. I don't recall in any of his letters to my mom that he mentioned a specific paint color. However, his sister who is now 98, has a bundle of his letters and the color might be mentioned in one of them. I am trying to get her to send them to me.

I have a picture of Ron 9's PT-156 ("COWBOY") showing a crewmember named "Sandy" and bearing last names for many of the others. If that would be of interest to you, send me your e-mail address and I'll forward a copy.
