Hello Board Members! My Name is Joy!

My Dad was in the South West Pacific in the engine room of an Elco PT boat, he refered to himself as a Motor Mac, he was badly wounded later on at Leyte in his boat's engine room. Dad's gone now, but I'm trying to tell his Grandson the whole story or as much as I can find out. I can't remember the boat number, and dad would never speak of the war he saw. He did love the boats and I remember Dad telling his friends of "those three big packard twelves" in a fashion that sounded like they personally belonged to him!

Well......here is where I need some expert help, I found a Manual on the 4M 2500 Packard Marine PT boat engine on EBay, with engine room photos of where Dad used sit and watch the engines while working in the tropical heat, this is the stuff I'm trying to explain to his grandson, how grampa was wounded and stayed with his engines. The Book looks really good, I need to know if you all think it looks right. The auction ends this Sunday June 24. So could someone could have a look to see if it's correct for a world war two grandson? If it is Dad must have read it during training, maybe even had a copy on the boat.

Bye for now
Joy

Joy,

The Ebay item you're referring to is definitely a U.S. Navy manual on the Packard 4M 2500 Marine Engine -- the engines used in all the World War II U.S. PT boats, three to a boat.

If your Dad was a PT boat "Motor Mac" (Motor Machinist's Mate) in WWII, those are definitely the engines he worked on and kept running.

Joy:

I have seen the Manual that you are looking at because I have several of them in my Exhibit. This manual will most likely fetch $400 to $500 when the auction ends. Unless you feel the need to have an original manual in your hands, may I give you a solution. I have sent folks copies of this manual in the past. The copies are nice crisp copies using the highest resolution machine. I do not do it home, but I have it done on a color printer at my local COPT CAT PRINT SHOP. This will do two things. It will give you a much cheaper avenue. You will have a manual that you can look thru, touch and not have to worry about finger prints or wrecking pages of an original manual. If you are interested please contact me off site at mosquitofleet@comcast.net By the way, most motor macs carried the pocket version of the Packard marine manual, which was intended to keep in your pants pocket or in the engine room. Although more complete then the pocket manual, the book on Ebay is much larger and had more information in it then the pocket manual. Also the book has a question and answer section after each chapter.

Thank you Drew and Frank!

That's very kind of both of you to have a look at the Packard manual on Ebay for me! Frank that was really sweet of you in offering to copy the pages from your original manuals. I didn't know the book was in such demand, but when you mentioned it may go for four to five hundred dollars, I looked one up in the completed listings section and sure enough the last one just ended at $480.00!, and five or six bidders were going after it hot and heavy in the last few seconds, but the pages looked old and yellowed on that one. The one still listed has glossy photos judging by the listing, that's why I wanted to ask you fellows in the know if this one was authentic.

This has been a real pleasure, thank you both so much! If I win i'm baking you some cookies.....mmmmmm that sounds good, I think if I loose I'll send you cookies anyway!

Bye bye for now!
Joy

Hello Joy
I think this is the same manual you are looking for it's a copy on the english site of ebay. The seller will sell worldwide & it's up for buy now at £24.99 Plus p&p .
The seller say's that it is a 1st generation copy. if you only want 1 to show your son then this is an option.
The ebay listing number is 220027422549 it doen't say when it finnishes.
Might be worth a look.
All the best

Hi again!

Thank you Shaun! You guys are so sweet! Thank you for the information on the item in the UK, that one only has 56 photos and 6 sections, it looks smaller and the seller didn't post any of the photos, but it may be a good second choice. I messaged the seller of the Packard manual that ends this sunday, he was really helpful and friendly, he said the manual in his auction has hundreds of photos, he counted to two hunderd about half way through and thinks there is about 200 more in the other half, with 25 or so sections. I told him one photo looks just like my Dad watching the gauges, it's funny my dad would always sit like that too, it's must have been from all the time he spent inside a bouncing boat.

Frank, I've got to find a way to overnight fresh baked hot cookies to your front door!

Thanks!
Bye!
Joy

Hello Joy,

Franks offer sounds good to me. I've been out bid at the last three times for this manual on ebay, the last time I lost out to went for $650.00. A bit steep for my blood.

Hello Wayne!

Do you think this Manual could go that high again? $650.00 Hoo-wee!
Getting a bit steep for my blood too, if anyone on this board would like to bid I won't mind, I might be better off spending the money to go see Frank's PT Boat display in July.

Bye for now!

Hello Joy,

Don't know, it seems everytime I bid on something PT related the prices go through the roof and I'm usually out bid within the last minutes of the auction. And when I don't bid at all, it goes at a reasonable price.

After seeing Franks post I'd, happily to settle for a copy of this manual. As a modeler I'm always looking for info. With Franks copy the information inside the copied piece is the same. Its just not an original.

Hope this helps.
