Jeff,
Making details with both 3D and photo etch parts would be the best of both worlds!

Cool Bob, I'm happy to see someone is doing the smaller scales. And thank you for the faith in my work!

Jeff,
As an FYI, it appears more 3D parts in 1/48 are coming our way for those with an interest in this scale.
The Shapeways designer HOLDEN8702 (Luis) lives in Spain and upon my enquiry has made 1/48 Oerlikon ammo lockers available in two sets; one with closed lids and one with open lids.

I've ordered one of each set and hope when they arrive they're up to your exacting standards.
Cheers!

For the engine hatch lockers, check out ELCO_Roll_5535-2_72SCAN_00530 & 529. They were rather simple wood boxes.

Luis HOLDEN8702 has also come through on numerous request that I have made off him. JFYI he has recently offered both Elco and Higgins exhaust in a variety of scales, very accurate scale figures in various scales and poses, and also a variety of weapons, both man and crew served.

You're welcome Larry. I like Luis's figures, he even has some cool zombie army ones! That opens up some interesting diorama possibilities...

Hi. This is Luis, writing from the sunny Spain.
Thanks for your kind comments about my models.
About the PT mufflers, all changes can be done to adapt them to your model.
It isn't difficult to change angle of flappers or size of reinforcing bands, even to delete mounting brackets. Only ask.
You can contact me here, by shapeways PM or even by my facebook HOLDEN8702.
Best regards
Luis

Welcome to the PT board Luis!
There is a section of the Elco muffler drawing that the owner of this board, Dick Washichek, kindly allowed me to post on this page that should help with the early mufflers: http://www.pt103.com/Italeri_PT109_Kit.html#mufflers. Besides the flappers, note how the cooling jacket on the upper sides of the muffler bodies faired in to the inlets without sticking out.

Thanks, Jeff.
Yes, I've used this drawing for my design, but also some pics to make accurate the model.
Really I haven't any pic who exactly match this drawing.
But please upload an sketch about what you say, this isn't enough clear from your explanation.
Best regards
Luis

You're welcome Luis.
The red line is on the outside of the jacket, it is about even with the side of the inlet:
