I think this is the only way your going to get people interested in this project if it is a 501-C3, without it this restoration would be doomed, unless you have millions to do the project. One step at a time, and at this point the owner needs to give up the boat.

Hi Frank,
I had experience with the LCI in this similar situation. The former owner had to sell the LCI to the Non Profit group before any real progress on the restoration could be done. Having a clear title of ownership by the Non profit is very important since it will make other things like Grants and Charitable Trust giving more likely. Nobody will want to give their time and energy and money to a private person who owns the boat, since they would simply use those donations to enrich themselves and do no actual restoration. Even with the best of intentions, a private individual should not be the beneficiary of any efforts or donations to restore the vessel. It just gets too muddy and reeks of unethical behavior. Thankfully we finally came to this end after fighting it out in court. Just a word of experience. Frank is telling the truth!

I know the primary focus is on 486 now, but down the road how hard will it be to restore 615 and to remove all that fiberglass?

tough call on what has to happen out there in Kingston. The boats should be under a 501 C 3 not private ownership. When I had 761 it was all under a 501 c 3

I don't see why more care isn't taken for these old boats.
You bringing up 761 made me think of this, its just unfortunate.
I guess at least out of all the Higgins boats, we still have four Elcos in the US.
PT-761 looked like a cool boat, would of made a nice restoration.

the guy that moved it for us at the location in FL was willing to move it for the new owner. All he had to do was cover the immediate cost and then pay him with some interest over time. The guy kept going to people that wanted 23% or more on their money, the people that owned the property she was on wanted to sell so the boat had to go any way any how so they destroyed it. She was a mess but it was still built for one sole purpose and was an Elco PT Boat.

Yes, the time and labor involved to sand off all the fibreglass would be insane, plus we have no idea what damage is underneath. It would be more cost effective to just re-plank the whole hull.
Take care,
