Beautiful model Bob, I see you have some awesome awards and honors for it! I'm looking forward to seeing your PT model progress, you sure have a great kit as a base.

Thanks for the kind words, Jeff. I appreciate that! Not only do I hold in my hands a great kit designed by a talented - if non-hirsute (grin) - modeler/researcher/historian, but I have access to a great forum and a number of incredible websites such as pt103.com.

Cheers!

Bob,
I dug out my Ships In Scale magazine with your USS Kidd. I enjoyed reading your article and kit review. You really took that kit to the next level.

It reminded me of building the kit you're about to undertake. Before you ask I did not finish her. I was diverted to the Italeri kit after working with them on their release. It was fun and challenging while I was working on it though.

I hope you have fun with her and I look forward to watching it come together. After seeing the Kidd I can imagine what you'll be doing with your kit.

Thanks for the kind words, Dave; much appreciated! Ships in Scale magazine ran the USS Kidd article over the next four issues, for a total of five. Looks like I had too much to say....grin.

Speaking of your Italeri kit, are there any photos on the forum of it? Also, does that kit have any of the underhull details aside from the props, shafts, and struts?

Cheers!

Bob, I don't think any commercially avaliable kit has the detail you're looking for, I guess David W. was planning to add it on a 1/35 Italeri kit he's building.
At 1/48 scale those fittings are definitely tiny.
BTW a talented and immodest swiss modeler might have been the first to ever include those detail in a PT boat model.

Well, that "immodest" Swiss modeler certainly has been a big help to me with his research and photos depicting the underhull fittings in place.

Cheers!

Bob, if you are interested in some more guesswork about placement of toilet discharge outlets ect. I'll be glad to share it with you;I just have to check my results once more.
Have you figured out what boat are you modeling? Lower hull configuration also varied a bit depending on placement in the production run.
Cheers.

Daniele,

I'm planning on 187, 188, or 189. Not sure yet, but these were early series boats and are most closely configured to what's represented in the BlueJacket kit. With the exception of the kit-included 40mm which I don't plan on using.

And yes! I'm VERY interested in any information, photos, or plans you'd care to share regarding the underhull fittings and openings.

Cheers!

Bob, here the measurements I figured out by scaling Elco drawing 3004 "Plumbing system" aka roll1 scan 104-105:
Crew wash basin drain: 3 3/4"aft Fr #5; 31 3/4"to port.
Crew toilet discharge : 6"fwd Bkhd#9; 33 1/2" to port.
Crew toilet SW intake : 6 1/8" fwd Fr#19; 8 7/16" to port.
Officers wash basin drain: 12 5/16" fwd Bkhd#33; 68 3/16" to port.
Officers toilet discharge : 2 5/16" aft Fr#33; 73 1/2" to port.
Officers toilet SW intake : 5 3/8" aft Bkhd#28; 38 5/16" to port.
For bilge bailers placement see Jeff D.'s site hull section. Note that for PT 151-196 the lazarette bilge bailer is 4 1/8" aft Bkhd#61, 27 1/2" to starboard, not on the port transom edge like on earlier boats.
Placement of packard heat exchangers in/outlets can be found on the Elco parts catalog or on Elco drawing 4018-title illegible-aka roll 3 scan 195-196.
This drawing also permits to locate the aux.generator's SW intake.
So far I couldn't find quoted drawings of the placement of those fittings so I'm relying on scaled measurements from marginally reproduced general arrangement wievs....erratic at leastBut this is best guess on my part.
If you are fully detailing your lower hull don't forget the keel shoe and transom angle, used 0.2mm brass in 1/16th scale,in 1/48th beer can aluminium should work fine, also much more fun to collect.
The keel shoe is a 6" strip from transom to frame 15,then it widens gradually to 9" at bow. Transom binding angle(bottom and sides) is 3"x3"angle.
I hope this helps.
Greetings

Thanks Daniele, that's a major help in unraveling what, exactly, lies mysteriously under the 80' Elco hull. I very much appreciate your help in this quest for intakes, outlets, scoops, and what-have-you.

This type of help was generously and graciously given previously when building the 1/192 model of USS Kidd, DD661. Because of the knowledge, research, and sharing of the good folks at the Louisiana Naval War Memorial (USS Kidd) in Baton Rouge, USS Cassin Young in Boston, Al Ross II, and online warship forums the model was able to compete in the IPMS/USA Nationals in Kansas City in 2006. It was lucky enough to win a First Place in its category, the Truman/Eisenhower Era Award, Best Ship Award, and the Judges Grand Best of Show Award.

I think any competent modeler can accomplish this if he/she invests the time, but no competent modeler can do any of this without help such as yours, Al Ross', and other members of forums such as this who give of their time and expertise.

I've learned much from Jeff Davidson's pt103.com website, I've ordered Dick Washichek's PT 103 poster and DVD #1 from ptboats.com, and I'm gratified there is so much help out there for folks like me.

So, thanks again!

Cheers!

I'm happy you're finding my site useful Bob, and I really enjoy seeing what you "outside of the box" modelers can do.

Dick's Elco drawing DVD will be a great asset for your build. I happily threw away years of work when he sent me a copy. He spent over $1,000 so far supplying it to PT fans the world over, once again thanks Dick!
