A final thought on the PT 109 life raft. This photo taken in summer 1943 shows the PT 109 with no life raft on the bow area:

But Joan and Clay Blair in their (very reliable, in my experience) 1976 book The Search for JFK, which was based on extensive research and interviews with several 109 veterans, state on page 212: "the PT 109 life raft had been put ashore to make room for the 37mm."
So I will make the command decision to keep my reference on my page 67 as is: "To make room for the gun, they removed the PT 109's life raft." (No reference to "balsa" or any other material.)
