Actually, the Forum Masthead shot of PT-149 seems to show the device inflated.

Nice Will, thank you! Do you know where the photos were taken?

I believe in the Morobe-Nassau Bay area of New Guinea in '43.

Okay,
Funny I've been looking at this header photo for how long and haven't noticed this? Anyway, first picture, is this some sort of rectangular frame to assist in directing air into the engine hatch?
And what the heck is this sticking up by the port forward cowl vent? Any thoughts?
By the way, I take back what I suggested about the Revell kit. I'm sure it was a lame attempt on their part to create the deflector and not anything to do with our mystery canvas. :-)

It looks like the hatchway aft hatch open Dave. There appears to be something behind the 20mm portside but I've no clue as to what:
Guessing that the images were taken on the same day, the object(s) could be what is behind the 20mm in the above image:

Guys,
Don't think the two photos were taken the same day, or may even be of the same boat, as the masthead photo boat has it's A-frame mast up ahead of the SCR-517A, and the other doesn't.
The masthead photo boat has a little added piece on the 20-mm limit rail, "star"-reinforced aft tube doors, and no canvas splash shield on the port aft twin-.50 turret. The other boat in the photo(s) has no added limit piece, a splash shield on the aft turret, and smooth aft tube doors.
As a matter of fact, the masthead photo boat has always been I.D.'d as the 149, but photos of the 149 where positive I.D. is present (boat number seen on the charthouse or starboard twin-.50 turret), there's no A-frame mast up, so..?

Here are two more taken about the same time. The 80' ELCO has the canvass contraption set up. These are from Gene's site.
PT 66 and PT 142(maybe) Morobe July- October 1943
PT 66 and PT 142(maybe) Morobe July- October 1943.
Remember as per Al's research SCR-517 was originally on PT 127, 128, 131, 132, 135, 136, 142, 143, 145, 149, 151, 152,155, 159, 163, 164, 168, 172, 175-178. and my photo of PT 167 with it in Bayonne, NJ.
Take care,
TED
