Jeff,
That's interesting, as in the stern photo of the 109 the structure is not there and the liferaft is visible.
Adds weight to the theory that it was in the process of being fitted prior to shipping.
Best Regards,
Stu.

Jeff;
Good job, I tried to load this same photo last might on my Photobucket, but for some reason it was freezing at 90%.
Take care,

Stu found an image of the 105 refueling showing the front of the structure, it looks closed but may have a big wrinkle on the bottom indicating it was detached from the hatchway and hanging loose:

Thank you Stu, you're a fine researcher.

Thanks,
It was good to go through all the photos again to find a 'new' detail. Amazing what you miss, I had never spotted the hood in that photo. It would be good to get a definitive answer as to the function of it. It does look loose at the front. If it was just an air scoop, I would have thought that the open hatch would be just as effective.

Jeff,
You are right, it just looks like it is open at the bottom.

Stu.

A total guess would be it is why they went with a much taller hatchway and did away with 2 of the engine hatch funnels starting with PT 187.
Going by the white funnels, this might be PT 140 or 141 at MTBSTC.

This mysterious canvas structure (whatever it is) may explain the unexplainable deflector and opening in the back of the day cabin on the Revell kit.

Could it have been that it was supposed to block/prevent shipping water over the dayroom canopy into an open engine room hatch, and/or the 20 mm gun area?

Do you have an image of it Dave?
I don't think so Drew it looks open in front. But I've certainly been wrong before! It was on June 23rd 1969.
In any case it wasn't used much, I've been checking but so far no photos of it fully erected on a moving boat.
