Well done Dave a first and a second and the Sub looks grand, the detail and effort you put into your models has been justly rewarded.
Many thanks for including us at your work bench to see what it takes to produce such gems!
I have to tell you I get more compliments about the base and stand.
That was the first thing that I noticed. Can we see more of how you did the base/stand?

Thanks guys. The base was surprisingly easy to do. I made it out of a piece of maple plank and trimmed it with some maple quarter round. It's finished with a clear polyurethane.
The art work was done in Microsoft Word. I sent the file to the guy that did the laser etching and taped the art work example down to the base where I wanted it. I sent it all off in the mail and in a few weeks I got the base back. I can't remember if I finished it before or after the laser etching was done. If you're thinking about doing this ask the engraver what they think will work best. Do yourself a favor and shop around. I was amazed at the differences in prices I found.
I've changed my strategy on bases and acrylic tops. Now days I make the base from 1x2 and cut a rabbet joint on the top outside edge. The acrylic top fits on top and down around the rabbet. I secure it with screws. That's a much safer solution.
It's a nice way to preserve a special model.

Glad to see that build won a prize! Not surprised though. I've been studying your thread as I (slowly) attempt my 1/72 PTs.

Dave, just came across this post and picture. I commend you on the wooden base and the PT cradle.
where can I get plans for that? or is there any chance that Shapeways makes one?

Thank you. I got the plans from PT Boats Inc. They are a little weak but with them and looking at photos you can easily put one together. They are also large so you need to scale them down. I have not seen them on Shapeways. I used Evergreen plastic to construct them. They sell various sizes of I beams that work quite well. Sorry I don't remember the sizes but if I remember correctly I used most of their smaller sizes.
I think if Shapeways did it the price would be outrageous in FUD or FED. It's a good scratch project to do.
