Apologies if this is a redundant question, but I didn't find a answer after wading through the search results here on the forum, and what books I own are not accessible right now.

Were boats configured like the 596, weapons wise, assigned to the English Channel/Med areas of operations?

It's been years since I looked at any of my books, so I don't recall. I have a line on the kit, at a decent price, and am seriously thinking of giving it a go.

I had a uncle serve on PTs, but in Europe. He passed away before I had any serious interest in subject, and have no idea what boat he was on. All I remember is him telling my Dad, after we all saw the movie PT 109, that the boats he was on had a lot more firepower.

Any info appreciated.

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum Jim. The Italeri PT-596 kit is the best starting point for any of the European based Elco's. From there it's a very easy conversion and Italeri offers additional parts such as crew and radar that would allow you to easily convert the model to most anything you want. The only piece that hasn't been made in kit form is the Thunderbolt gun platform which some of the boats experimented with. Did you have a particular boat in mind? Perhaps we can help.

Jim;
Welcome aboard! Can you give me tour Uncles full name, maybe I can find some info on him. If I can, maybe that will narrow down the boat you need to model.
Take care,

David and Ted, a late Thank You for the replies. Life got a little involved for a few weeks.

Ted, I managed to talk to a Aunt, the last remaining family member who might have had info. It seems my uncle, was not a PT boat crew member, but a engine mechanic who worked on them, along with other small craft.

So I'll not worry about any particular boat, just one that was over in Europe, verses the Pacific, if possible.

Not sure I have the skill to scratchbuild a Thunderbolt turret, so would only do one of them as a last resort

I assume the boats over there wore a different paint Measure?

Would Garth Connelly's book be useful?

Thanks again.

Let's start with references. I would recommend David Doyle's "PT Boats" from the In Action series, No. 14034. I would also recommend Victor Chun's book "American PT Boats in World War II - Volume Two". Both have sections on English Channel/Mediterranean PT Boat squadrons and some very interesting photos.

As for paint measure I refer to Al Ross' book "Allied Coastal Forces of World War II". Al refers to Measures 13 and Modified 16 as colors used by these squadrons. That said you can find photos of boats not using this scheme but a much darker color. In fact mixed colors. Al and I had a conversation about this and maybe he has some new information.

My favorite boat is the 505. She was on patrol off the coast of France during D-Day and sustained a mine explosion. She was repaired and ultimately returned to the US in a training capacity. I was fortunate enough to meet Mr. Franks who served on this boat.

I'll respond to your questions about the kit parts in your other thread. I look forward to what the other guys will have to add.

Thanks again, David, for the reply.

I searched out the books you listed, Doyle's book is available at a decent price from Amazon. The other 2, I can't justify the prices just for one model build.

Least expensive copy of Victor Chun's book (which I can only fine a single volume, no Vol, II) would cost me $30.

Al Ross's Vol II, which covers Elco boats, would be in the range of $75.

I would love to have them, but budget just won't allow it.

I might just pick a number from one of Ron's stationed over there, and do a fictional boat. Leave off the rocket launchers, have it just gun and torpedo armed, maybe replace 2 torps with depth charges.

The model won't be seen, unless someone visits and sees it on my shelf, and chances are excellent that visitor would not know PT from a battleship
I'll do more digging regarding colors.
