Roy,
The 109 model looks great (although I would've pitched the searchlight and it's pintle arm). The figures look excellent, also.
With the 37mm on the foredeck, I assume the date of the diorama is August 1, 1943, right?
Nice work!

Hi Drew, you don't know how many times I looked at that searchlight and thought about tipping it a bit and turning it to port. Now keeping with the "What IF" reunion theme, this photo was taken well after that August night in 1943 and the skipper of this boat never had a chance to met Captain Yamashiro or get his feet wet swimming to Olasana Island. She returned to base on the 2nd and survived the war to attend this reunion with other boats that achieved some historical significance during operations. All of the deck weapons and torpedo tubes are not secured. As with many other boats that lasted to the end of the war, this boat just might show up when the project is finished looking a lot for "formidable" that she does right now. The theme of the "What If" reunion is just that, taking place after the closing of hostilities and before the very unfortunate bonfire.
Some of you might not know that PT 157 had an encounter much like the 109 only a week or so prior when she got so close to a Jap can, the only thing that saved her was the bow wake from a destroyer that pushed her away just in time.
Fate is an amazing thing only surpased by those that live to tell the stories.

Great job Roy, a true labor of love. I would love to know your plans for water, or are we seeing the finished product. I know that all the ones Stan has done for me, and the upcoming 108 project, he has cut the hulls to the water line than builds the water around the boats. Love the figures on the 109, I take it they are the new ones put out by Italeri?

Hey Frank, the water issue is a major problem. I don't want to cut the hulls as that will dedicate everything to stone. This way I can remove one or all of the boats for static display. The entire diorama is 1 foam under the water and the thought is to cut a perfect hole to recess each boat into this cradle. That's the easy part. The water might be thin plexi-glass with some slight glossy ripples with those same perfect holes cut but that is the real issue. I experimented with the crinkle plexi-glass and that was perfect if you look straight down but from side to side it looks like ice. As you know the plan is to have real water running in the stream that cross the road behind the crane and the other than runs behind and down to the fuel dock. Now a friend who knows nothing about modeling suggested I just seal the entire thing, pour in some real water and place a small fan running at very slow speed to create small ripples in the water and just have the entire thing on a recirculating pump. Now that is the best idea I have heard yet and thanks to him have spent some long nights trying to get to sleep with that running through my head. I think the 2 biggest issues I see with that idea is what kind of small fish to get and boy would I be upset if it sprung a leak all over that nice new floor. |
