Having read in the post on the 555, that a pilot boat was used. What was a pilot boat? I think it may be a LCP(R) as they are listed as pilot boats on APAs.

Jeff;
This might be true, or it might be as it is today, the pilot boat is the boat that delivers the harbor pilot to the incoming merchant vessel. Maybe a French harbor pilot for the port of Marseilles(which was very close by to the location), or USN harbor pilot, which were in units known as Harbor Entrance Control Post (HECP) which also included a Captain of the Port (COTP), Harbor Clearance Units, Underwater Detection Units(Underwater Magnetic Indicator Loops and also hydrophones), and Drew Units, which were Shipping designator for assemblies schedules to go to Europe for mainly the Normandy invasion, but 1 or 2 of these Units were in the Med.
At any rate, I am sure the closest vessels to the scene were utilized, to tow PT 555 back. As can be seen in the photo, it looks like the stern separated almost exactly at the forward engineroom bulkhead, and even if the bulkhead was fractured, it would provide a adequate enough situation for the boat to be recovered, if they were able to tow it back soon enough. But this was not to be and "Daisy Mae" had to sunk.
Take care,
TED
