Hello, all-
Just poking my head in the door to say hello- my name is Randy Riker, and I'm new to the forum.
I've been a fan of PT boats ever since I was a kid, (I'm 51) and I'm currently building yet another Revell PT-109 kit (my sixth kit since the age of 10) and am currently doing lots of poking around here and there for additional details.
I have the 40th anniversary edition of Robert Donovan's book on PT-109 and 2 Squadron/Signal books on the 80' Elcos.
I've seen so many helpful hints and history being discussed here on the forum, but have one question. The decals in the Revell kit are so horribly inaccurate, and make me want to hurl, that I'm definitely not going to use them.
Is there a source for 1/72 scale decals for PT-103 class boats, that are the proper block-style numeric graphics, without shading, that JFK's boat had?
Unfortunately, I don't have an ALPS printer, or I'd probably make them myself.
Many thanks in advance for your assistance!

Randy;
Welcome, I always used model railroad lettering/numbers for my 1/72nd scale model PT's.
Take care,
TED

Randy,
Welcome to the board.
We've got several WWII PT veterans, and many historians (amateur and otherwise), authors, enthusiasts and model-makers on this Forum. The old post archives alone are definitely worth your time to browse through.
The only decal on the Revell 1/72nd scale PT 109 model's decal sheet worth using is the smallest "109," which is the proper scale for the boat number 1) centered on the forward face of the charthouse between and above the ports, 2) on the port cockpit splash shield above the grab rail, 3) on the starboard twin-.50 turret below the turret rim, and 4) on the 20 mm pedestal .
Use this decal only if you want to represent an original factory marking, which may or may not have survived an over-painting/repainting in the forward area.
Vintage photographic evidence shows these original shaded numbers were preserved on some boats, sometimes carefully over-painted (with possibly gray replacing the too-high-visibility white), sometimes painted around, and sometimes not, replaced with several different font styles and even different colors.

Randy:
For my Revell Elco's, I used Alliance Modelworks US Navy Ship Markings. They are 1:350 scale but in varying sizes.
Their stock number is NW35039.
Hope this helps.

Rick- Thanks so much for the tip- I'll keep it in mind for future builds. I went to my local railroad hobby shop here in town and ordered a set of dry transfer markings in the proper block-style numerals, in white. The font style is called "U.S. Gothic Block" I'll get the manufacturer and product ID numbers and let everyone know as soon as I pick them up.
Thanks again!
