I'm down to the last few pieces on the build but am unsure about an item.

The kit comes with poles behind the art torpedoes and a tri-pod poles in the corners of the stern. These are to mount what was a cable rail or hand hold that ran from one aft torpedo rack to the corner at the stern, across the stern to the other corner and then forward to the other side aft torpedo rack. The was also a cable rail running between the for and aft torpedo racks.
I see these in photos of the real boats but only the late ones, like the 596. It is hard to pick out on earlier boats. Would boats like my model, 495 have these? If so, were they removable and only used as needed? They look kind of neat and add some detail but if the boats in '44 wouldn't have used them, I don't want to install them.

Last question,
There is also a staff on the stern with a light on it and then the staff extends higher. It is high enough to interfere with the 40 mm rotation if not elevated. Would this have been removed? Is the top portion removable, leaving the bottom with the lamp? I'm looking for guidance on how to finish this off.
Thanks,
Ed

If you watch They Were Expendable, you see them place the flag staff in as they pull away from the dock and visa versa.

Many items that were added at the Factory were removed once out in the Field. The hand rails you speak of were mainly used State side and were a hinderence for the Crew that needed to get around the Bow. Battle Flags were generally attached to the Radar Mast along with the Commissioning Pennants. The rear Flag was used on the stern briefly, but would become wrecked if the smoke generator was turned on. Sometimes when in port or docked the boats would put out these flags on the stern as they did with the Blue Ensign on the Bow. Once underway they would be removed and stored. The only Flags Flying would be the US Battle Flag on the Mast. I would assume some boats might have kept the stern flag pole on while underway, but those that did would have to leave a post here as veterans that I spoke with did not use it underway.

Thanks guys. It looked like the upper half of the flagstaff was removable on the 596 with the lower portion mounting a lamp. I've looked at more photos this morning and can't see any flagstaffs, lamps, stanchions or cable railings on boats that could be the same vintage and theater of operation as my model. I did see some channel boats in the low 500 range that seemed to have the rail cables, flaggstaff, etc.

I guess I'll not install these on Gentleman Jim. I made the Gentleman Jim nameplate last night and may be able to install it tonight

I need 2 styrene solid disks, 0.250" in diameter, 0.015 to 0.025 think if anybody has a punch set or other idea. I looked for a 1/4" styrene rod at my local hobby shop but they didn't have any. I could cut a slice form one if anybody has a source.

Thanks,
Ed
