Hi All,

Here's a report from 14-15 September, 1943. MTB-Rendova sent 5-boats on a daylight sweep of the Northern coast of Vella Lavella.

Section T: PT's: 181, 178, 170 NW coast, Doveli Cove area
Ens. W. Mills, Lt.(jg) G.C. Miller & W.J. Maul

Section R: PT's: 176, 175 NE Coast Lambu Lambu area
Ensigns W.E. Powell & R.L. Balch

About 15-days after this sweep, the New Zealand Troops who occupied the NW section of Vella Lavella would be receiving much needed supplies from the US. A Japanese Air-Attack on LST-448 on 1-Oct, 1943 would kill US sailors & Marines and destroy most of it's cargo to the Allied forces.
Among my Uncle's photo collection is a snapshot of 448 burning and the 1st monument to be erected.

The US and NZ troops erected a small monument to those that died soon after the tragedy and in the mid-2000's it was cleaned and a ceremony conducted. I have a copy of LST-448's log entry of the event and a damage assessment with diagrams of the bomb hits.
