I’m curious about what the crews wore at sea. I see all the casual photos at base, with the guys in various states of undress… but in transit to station- proper uniform, or still shorts and Oops, where’s my shirt? And in action? Life jackets and helmets, only when action was imminent?

Pat I don't know what other boat crews did but I can tell you what I and most of my boat crew wore. Underway to and from patrol and while on patrol at night I wore a chambray long sleeved shirt and long legged dungarees. It would get cool at night. Especially if it rained or rough seas and you were wet. Our skipper required us to have our life jacket with us at all times when underway. We didn't have to have them on but nearby. At General Quarters - lifejackets on and helmets. I was a 50 cal. turret gunner and you sure needed long pants because the 50 cal shell hulls are really hot. At the base when not on patrol we wore only white Navy skivvy shorts. Later after the Green Island base became more secure- an Order came out that long pants or regular shorts were required to wear to chow. (no skivvies) We could still go without shirts. Everybody sure grumbled about it. We liked comfort. I wore Marine roughout shoes but I cut the tops off and made slippers out of them.

Yes, thanks! And exactly my reason... there could be crew on my boat, and I'd want to design them in the correct gear (hint hint).
And officers, khakis and visor or "garrison" caps?

Patrick the Officers usually would wear both types of Hats, many preferring the green caps. You are right usually they wore the Kaki pants, and shirt while on Patrols, Some while at Base would kick off that shirt and stroll around with no shirt, Kaki pants and Visor Cap.
