While I am waiting for the hull weathering to dry before adding the marine growth I started planning what to do with the anchor and raft mounting.

In a photo of the 495, the anchor was resting on the starboard toerail and the rope was running back to a cleat by the torpedo then back forward, through the bullnose to the bow cleat. In the photos i placed it like the photo. I didn't have the bullnose mounted yet but will once the deck is glued to the hull. In the original photo the boat was nested.

Is it possible that the anchor would have remained in this position if the boat was on a mission?

On another issue, if the anchor is located as shown, the boats anchor hold-downs on the port bow would not be used. Other boats in photos of 495 's squadron show the raft located on the port bow in the location of my raft in my photos. I figured if the anchor was on the starboard bow maybe the crew would have use them and the toerail to secure the faft.

Does this seem plausible to you guys who are more knowledgable about the PT Boats?

I also discovered that when I ordered a display case I didn't take into acount the length of the radio antenna. So, I remembered that some of them were 1 piece and some were in 5 or 6 foot sevtion and could be extended. That is what I tried to depict, one section extended. I know it doesn't look real good but figured it looked better than a short whip or none at all. Thoughts?

Thanks,
Ed

Ed,

I don't think they would have that much line laying about. Everything is usually coiled up. I don't know if they actually used their anchors much, I imagine they were usually going dock to dock. Have to ask some the real PTers that are here. I looked though most of the pics I have and the anchors are usually stowed, and have no line. I almost never used my anchor with my boat, even fishing. Did they have a short chain leader? I would think (here's were I get in trouble, thinking) that even lying in wait, when time came to move you had to move fast, so they probably drifted and idled.

I like the way the flag drapes. Is that the Archer flag?

How much clearance do you have in the case? You could use steel guitar string and have in whipped back by the case itself as long as it went back and not to the side. But since the flag is limp, you ain't movin.

The opinions expressed due not reflect the views of the management.

Hi Kurt.
Yes, Archer.

In the photos I've seen there was no chain leader.

The picture my anchor depicts is nested to the Oyster Bay. I was wondering aboutif it would look that way when underway, like you expressed.

I was just sitting here playing and waiting for paint to dry and started looking at these details.

Hopefully some vet will point me in the right direction.

The case is only an inch or 2 taller than the radar dome. The whip laying back that far look pretty lame.. I tried it but didn't like it.

Ed:

It is highly unlikely that any Skipper would allow any lines to be laying strewn across the deck. Most lines were coiled and Fenders stowed away until docking. There was enough clutter around the deck to fall on without worrying about lines. In my experience I have seen most boats that are storing the anchor above decks to have them on the Port side of the Bow. Some boats tied them to the Tow Rail having no line attached, some boats stored the anchor below decks in the forepeak area and some boats had an anchor lock on the port side which consisted of 2 blocks in which the anchor could be secured. As I write this to you, I do remember seeing one boat with the line streched out simulat to your set up. It was PT 523, but the line was not atached to the anchor but was attached to the Sampson Post and ran back almost to the port side 20mm. I think most boats kept the anchors in the Forepeak as not many of them had the time to anchor anywhere. Also since you are always asking opinions, the weathering job on the deck looks very good, but i would leave the bottom of the Hull alone. Showing a boat with barnicles and marine growth gives the illusion of a uncared for boat. I know that the growth happened espically on wooden boats in the hot climate of the Pacific, but they were taken out scrapped and painted by Crews and base force personel who did a super job keeping the boats battle worthy. If you are going to show your boat in a dry dock area, then it would be neat to show it, maybe with growth in one area and beginning to be scrapped in another. Again, just my opinion on he subject.

Thanks Frank. I suspected the lines as I positioned them would religate the model to a docked senario but wanted confirmation.
This photo of 491, 495 and 490 nested together shows a variety of configurations.

I guess I need to decide if I'm going to display the boat "nested" or "underway" and stow gear accordingly.

As for the marine growth, I plan to leave the hull bottom as shown with the exception of an algea line at the waterline.

This photo of the 493 show the band at the time of her sinking.

In this photo of Ron33 boats, you can see the darkened line right along the waterline also.

Considering the weathering and wear shown on the rest of the model I think a clean waterline might look a little out-of-place but am open to other opinions. I may tone it down from what I had originally planned.
Thanks again,
Ed

I always thought that subtle wins. It's too eazy to overdo it. Hey, if shes rafting, why not hang out the laundry! Lots of pics of that. LOL

Hi Ed,
That little hatch forward and to the port side of your 37mm is the chainlocker hatch. Whatever was attached to the anchor was stowed in this area. Chain I would supose. I've never seen a photo of an anchor tied up to anything on a PT. Whenver the anchor is visible they are located as shown on the 491 boat which is close by the chainlocker. I think your raft is positioned well but it would be equally at home on the day cabin.

Ropes are appropriate as seen in your photos and are a great detail item.

Keep it going!
Dave

Thanks Dave. The center boat in the nested photo is my subject, 495. It doesn't display a raft but the others do. I like the raft so I will find a place for it.
In the phohot you can just make out 495's anchor on the starboard bow, sitting on the toe rail near the cleat. Of interest also is that she is missing a section of her port toerail where the others have their rafts located.

I've got some crewman I may use if I get the energy to do it. If I do, the boat will probably need to be displayed in a more "under way" scheme. I will need to undroop the flag and probably stow the ropes in a more "ship-shape" maner.

Kurt, I don't think so.

your boat is too nice to do that to, but it would make a nice diorama, with laundry and "stuff" all laying about, the general clutter you see in some of the photos. Maybe one of the guns broken down,

Ed,
It's not entirely unlikely that there was no life raft on this boat. Any idea what happened to the toe railing? Maybe it's with the raft.
