From the Mag-14 History...

"...On August first, the last day of the campaign as covered by this history, the Marines had a real "marale" treat. Bob Hope, Frances Langford, Jerry Calonna (sic), supplemented by a fine staff of entertainers, took the camp by storm. On 24-hr notice, Service Squadron personnel built a stage in the SCAT area where an estimated 8,000 Marines, Sea Bees, Sailors and Soldiers witnessed jokes and funny-man routines, dances, songs, and "patter". ..."

Robert

Thank you Robert. I particularly enjoyed the Operations Report and the co-operation of the Black Cats. Looking forward to reading more.

Robert: The Bob Hope Show you refer to on Aug 1, '44 was shown at the airport on Green early in the afternoon. PT 237 from our squadron picked the group up after that show at the airport and brought them to the PT base on Barham Island across the lagoon from the airport for the show at the PT base. (I have some pictures of the group on the PT Boat) They didn't get to our base until late afternoon.. We had been waiting since lunch for them to get there- sitting on coconut logs for seats. Things were pretty secure at Green by then so they allowed all the boat crews to come to the show. No one had to stand guard duty. It was a great show. As I mentioned here before it started raining while Francis Langford was singing- she stopped and asked "What do you do when it rains?" The crowd of PTers yelled "GET WET".

Hi Mr. Willis,

I'll bet it was a great show and especially for all of you guys on the islands. My uncle snapped a couple photos too but they're just slightly blurry versions of the ones we see everywhere. On some website, I saw a snap of Patty Thomas doing a high kick in her routine...I'll keep this "G" rated but let's just say the photographer had great timing.

I'm new to the forum and I'm still trying to catch-up on the many posts from the Veterans. Let me add my sincere appreciation to you for sharing your stories.

By-the-way, I'll have some more PT reports to pass on along soon, I need to convert them to a PDF format and clean them up.

Best Regards,
Robert
