Just thought it was appropriate to point out that on this day 69 years ago, on August 6, 1945, the B29 Bomber "Enola Gay" Piloted by Col Paul Tibbets dropped the First Atomic Bomb "Little Boy" onto the Japanese City of Hiroshima. This bomb along with the next one on August 9, on Nagasaki, helped bring about the Japanese Unconditional Surrender. This action probably saved the lives of at least 1 MILLION US troops, and certainly more Japanese Military and Civilians, who would have been lost had the US had to carry out the Invasion of the Japanese Home Islands. Operation Olympic and Operation Coronet (the invasion of Japan) were slated to occur in October of 1945. I think the bombs were a great saving of many lifes and I am glad the President had enough foresight to understand the alternative.

Like President Truman, I'm a Missourian born and bred and am proud that "Give 'em Hell" Harry was from the Show-Me State. There is no doubt he made the right decision in giving the "green light" to drop the A-bombs, ending the war and saving many more lives that what those bombs killed.

I also think it is noteworth that Theodore “Dutch” VanKirk, the navigator for the Enola Gay and the last surviving crew member, passed away on July 28 at age 93.
