Pat;
I knew you were on Ham Smiths PT 154 RON 9, but, I just noticed you were on PT 486 RON 4, WOW! Do you know your boat, The 486, is up in Kingston NY right now awaiting restoration?
Also you were on USS Jamestown during the same time period, Ken Prescott was Gunnery Officer and Later XO. Do you remember him?
Take care,
TED

Ted, I was on PT486 from about July 1944 until April 1945.. The first part was spent cruising around Narragansett Bay with a group of students, showing them how to be a PT Boater. Sometime in 1945 the boat was sent up to Rocklandm ME to engage in a test with other small craft to determine what was the best type for Air Sea Rescue. As I recall, the Navy Inspectors decided that the PT boat would get to the victim the fastest but the poor guy would freeze to death before he could be gotten to the base. I did notice in thismessage board that the 486 went on a bond tour through the Great Lakes. That must have been nice..

In regard to the Jamestown (AGP3), I went aboard around Sept 1945 as replacement for a reserve radioman who enough points to go home early. I don't recall too many names as I was not on the Jamestown very long. It was sent back to San Francisco so it could be given back to its owner., After he saw what the Navy had down to his "yacht", he told the Navy to keep it. don't recall the XO's name but but it was a pleasant experience to meet him. I had put in for Electronic Tech school because the ETs were living the Navy in droves and the Navy was up to their ears n Bosuns and the like. The XO helped me quite a bit with the math subjects that I thought I would need in ET school.. We were anchored off of San Quentin prison at the time that I left in Feb 1946..

Pat;
It must be good to know that one of the boats you were on is still around, PT 486.
What is really interesting is that story you told about the XO on USS Jamestown, That sure sounds like Ken Prescott, he later got a doctorate degree in Fine Arts and Antiquities and served as curator and designer for several museums, including President Truman's Presidential Library.
Another interesting thing is Your old PT 486 RON 4, is awaiting restoration in Kingston NY, with PT 48 RON 3(2) which was Ken Prescott's last PT boat, which he Skippered in the Solomons 1943-1944. Small world huh?
Take care,
TED
P.S. also with Your old boat and Ken's is PT 459 RON 30 and PT 615 RON 42

Pat, thanks so much for sharing a part of your PT BOAT History. As ted mentioned your old boat is still with us, in hopes someone or some group might step forward and purchase the 486 or other boats in Kingston. To date, there is no Elco PT BOAT that is on the water. Presently we have one HIGGINS PT under her own power, and shortly we will have another. It breaks my heart to think we might not see an Elco under her own power. Like Ted, I hope and pray that will change. The only 77 footer in the World is also in the same location, the boats just sitting there waiting.

Frank,
Since we learned that Bob's dad was on the 156, Bob and I would love to see a 80' Elco, in any condition.
You say, "they are just sitting there waiting"
Can a person see them?
Julie

Julie, as far as I am aware you can go there. I now a few friends of mine went to visit the site, which is located at 101 E. Strand Street in Kingston, New York. Of course I would call first and that number is 718-596-0504. Good luck, let us know how you make out. My other suggestion before you go there would be to head to Battleship Cove in Fall River, Mass to see two restored PT's..............

Frank, before when I went back east in 2011, I tried to contact that guy several times over several weeks with no reply. At the time, the boats were just sitting there right next to the sidewalk. Talk about a small world, my grandfather, Ben Rhymer owned the marina south of that location and right next to the Kingston Powerboat Association. I spent many summers fueling boats and enjoying demo rides on his many Chris Craft boats he sold on the Rondout Creek.
