I have bee looking through a TON of World War Two photo of sailors(on PTs and Ships)in dungarees shirts(blue chambray shirts), and have yet to see a photo of a sailor with rank chevrons on his sleeve. I just want to make sure before I start painting my RON 40 crewmembers, was this something that was changed after World War Two?

Check out this Swabee, standing watch at the Higgins Factory 1942-1943

Take care,

I was with PT Boats from Sept. 1942 (Melville, RI) until Feb 1946 (USS Jamestown AGP3) less time at Fargo Receiving Station, Boston, MA and Shoemaker, CA. I don't recall anything on dungarees during that time except a few individuals at the Receiving stations (Non PT Boaters). I first saw them in abundance when I went aboard the USS John Burke (APD65) around Sept 1948.

P.S. I liked the duty aboard the Burke - cruises to Prince Edward Island, Canada in the summer and cruises to Barbados, Dominican Republic and Vieques in the winter. The big ships had to settle for places like Cuba, Puerto Rico or Newfoundland.

P.P.S. I still call the pants dungarees at home and get quizzical looks. They are JEANS now.

During WWII, rate marks on the chambray shirts was not "authorized" , i.e., not in the uniform regs. However, depending on the ship, later in the war, you do begin to see them. I don't know if they were stencils or hand drawn or an iron on.

Pat and Charlie;
Thanks for your input, Since I wrote this post I have found two photos on USS Missouri(both subjects show First Class Petty Officers), but I believe the photos are actually from the 1946-1953 period. I do know that the Dungaree Uniform was only authorized on board ship, and shore based duty station(ie: Airfields, weapons stations, shipyards, etc.), not like recent times when you can go to and from work, During World War Two you only went off base or ship in Blues or Whites depending on the season or location. Thanks again,
Take care,
TED

P.S. FOR OTHERS READING THIS: NICE RARELY SEEN DETAIL, CHECK OUT THE BAFFLE PLATE ON THE HIGGINS MUFFLER, ON THE PHOTO I POSTED ABOVE

Hi Ted,
That round damper (baffle plate) is able to be turned 90 degrees to force the exhaust flow down into the water instead of straight out the end into the air. There is a "choke cable" apparatus that operates the damper on the inside bulkhead of the engine room right above the aux generator control box. These choke cables have round black balls on the end that you must pull out to close the damper. That is a good view of the damper that I have never seen before. Good catch! Jerry

See the 3 black balls on the bulkhead to operate the damper

Jerry;
I take it that square lower portion is the underwater discharge once the baffle is closed? As for the 3 balls, I could make several jokes, but I will remain serious so I don't get a red flag next to my name on the Operations board at the Washichek Command Center!
Take care,

Glad you posted that color photo Ted. I need to get rid of the "cargo" pants on my PT 623 crew and I'm going to repaint them a bit darker than what I had on the video. I have also started the conversion of one of my PT 596 kits to the PT 191 Bambi which will be the next boat to arrive at the "What If" reunion. Any idea when Italeri is set to release the new 109 crew ??
