In keeping with Jerry's post of a PT base photo, attached is another such photo. My father, Clay Cooper (CO of PT 324) is sitting in the jeep. According to what my father wrote on the back of the photo, the fellow on the left is John Hauth, CO of PT 131. On the front of the jeep you can see the stenciled words PT Base. On the side, it looks like it might read PT Base No. 17. Does anyone know if there was, in fact, a PT Base 17, and where it might have been? Thanks!

Shep Cooper

Will, Ted and Earl:

Thanks much for your replies. So, based on this information, this photo may have been taken near or after, the end of hostilities. After Japan surrendered, and my Dad relinquished command of PT 324, he was assigned to a minesweeper, the USS Pinnacle.

Shep,
If you're ever interested there's an Admirable Class Mine Sweeper like your dad served on in the middle of a park in Omaha. USS Hazard, AM-240.

David:

Thank you alerting me of the minesweeper, the USS Hazard, that is in Omaha. I haven't been to Omaha in several years, but, if I do get back, I'll make a point of visiting it. Nice to hear one of that old class of surface combatants was preserved. The ship my Dad served on after the war, the USS Pinnacle (AM-274) had only a three-year period of service in the US Navy, from September 1943 to October, 1946, when she was decommissioned. However, in those three years, she engaged in minesweeping operations from the Black Sea to the East China Sea. The operations in the Black Sea were in support of the Yalta Conference, in which Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin planned the post-war era. It was transferred to the Nationalist Chinese Navy in 1948 according to Wikipedia, she enjoyed a long service with the that Navy, all the way up to 1970 when she was apparently scrapped.
