Hello All,
Although Bud is best know for having rescued the crew of the PT-109 in August 1943 in the Solomons while he was Skipper of the PT-157, he was transferred by Commander Bulkely in late 1943 to the ETO (European Theater of Operations). Bulkely wanedt to get some PTs in the invasion plan and therefore moved Bud and three other PT Skippers, along with PTs from RON-2 (thereafter this RON was known as Ron-2(2).

I contacted a local newspaper nearby Bud to encouraged them to talk to Bud, What came out was an excellent article about Bud and his D-Day mission as Skipper of the PT-199!

P.S. As many of you know, Bud wears two hearing aids (and you will note many D-Day veterans you will see on TV today also wear hearing aides). Yes, age plays a part however there is something known as the ‘D-Day hearing loss’. Due to extreme noise and noise impact level, many participants suffered some ear drum damage that later resulted in hearing loss. Many articles on line about vets hearing loss due to D-Day.

Thank you for sharing the link. Every story I read about these men of WW II reinforces my admiration for what they did.

Very good article, thanks for mentioning that to the paper so that they could get the interview of Bud and for sharing it with us. He had a very interesting Naval career. Bridge, do you know when Bud first arrived in the South Pacific and what squadron(s) and boat(s) he may have served?
