I was at the National Archives last month and pulled a couple of boxes - one looking for PT photos, and two others that just happened to have some PT photos. I've been slower than I would like in getting through my backlog of other projects, but I wanted to post two of the 100+ images I scanned as examples to see what people think. My goal would be to put more text in the captions with names, descriptions of buildings, etc. and then re-post higher-quality images with these captions so that when the inevitable saving and re-posting happens, this information is more likely to stay with the image and not be lost to time. So, the question here is how feasible might this be with the current expertise on the board?

Tracy,

Sounds like a neat idea...

My opinion is that you should post the whole photos and present them with captions underneath -- not on top of the photo, as you've done here.

I've thought about that (even thought about hiding the caption in the meta tags /EXIF data), but the goal is to keep the captions with the images. If I put them under the image, more people will simply cut them off to try and re-use them as their own - every basic program out there has a crop function. If they are on the image in such a way as to make that difficult (but not covering any important part of the photo, naturally), then it's harder to do that and less people are likely to. There's always going to be photoshop wizards who could cut the captions out and create a fill, but if I make it harder, it's more likely the work myself and anyone else who helps out on this project won't have been in vain.

Likewise, by putting the NARA image number on it, I make it easier for publishers who want to use it to grab the original as opposed to just saving it and creating the pixelated monstrosity we see in so many publications these days.

I want to publish the initial images and initial captions smaller than the final ones as well, so more people are likely to wait before the massive "right-click / save as" fest begins. I'm essentially hopping to trade with people.... the image isn't going to be complete and ready for anyone to re-publish in book form, etc., to their heart's content, but it will be extremely good quality for the web and will lead them to the originals if they want them. I can't think of any other good way to make it more likely the caption information will stay with the image - if anyone has a better idea, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks Al. - side note, I do hope / intend to add EXIF data as I have noticed some search engines using it in image results. I'm primarily hoping to add names to faces, so they're not lost to history.

Ummm yeah. I knew that :: insert face palm icon here ::
I did get it right on one of them.....

Here's a couple more, since I have a little bit of a head of steam. 99% sure this is PT-157 as there was another in the box that I have scanned that shows this same crewman in the forward tub with an identical 20mm mount on PT-157. Anyone know his name? The caption on that other one said Cdr. Robert D. Kelly... on his PT boat.. with members of his crew during the invasion of Rendova Island, Solomon Islands, Beginning 30 June.

There's a chance this next one is PT-157 as well, as her aft turret was not a 20mm, although it looks like a twin .50 mount to me. Once again - anyone know his name?

I've got some extra work hours this weekend (read: all of the awake ones) so I'm not going to be able to do much more until next week. I think what I'm going to have to do is create a new imgur account for all of these to post as I've got about 150 or more.

Frank, I'll contact you next week.

The last pic looks like a single .30 mount. Not sure it's a PT...
