Always wanted to ask you guys about this cover I found among my Dad's stuff.
A brown canvas cover about 36-37" long, with a flap that snaps closed on one end. Stencil on it says " COVER, SPARE BARREL M8 "
Do you think this has anything to do with PTs ?

One possible designation for "M-8' is the is the 6-wheeled M-8 Greyhound armored car built by Ford in WWII. It was armed with a 37mm gun, a .50 cal and a .30 cal machine gun, presumably with spare barrels available. Of course, this has no PT boat connection unless it refers to a spare barrels for the 37mm Oldsmobile cannon. Just a thought; there must be other "M-8" designations relating to WWII.

Cover, Spare Barrel M8 is the nomenclature of the bag. It does NOT relate / correspond to a vehicle. A bing search got over 4 million hits, the first few showed pictures.

Steve;
I have never seen one of these before, but it is correct length for an aircraft .50 cal spare barrel. But was this actually carried on the PT's when the spares were stowed?
I do know our HB(Heavy Barrel) spares were always carried in heavy black cardboard "mailing tube" type containers, in the armory on the boat.
FYI
30 caliber Browning M2 Aircraft barrel size: 23,9 inches (the type on PT BOATS)
50 caliber Browning M2 Aircraft Basic barrel size: 36 inches(the type on PT BOATS)
50 caliber Browning M2HB barrel size: 45 inches (the type used by infantry and tanks).
Just to make sure, send Chief O"Hara up to the roof and turn on the AL- light
Take care,
TED

As Ted said, the length is about right Steve. The barrel is about 5" circumference at its widest point, is the cover at least 2 3/4" or so wide? If so, it might very well be something your father brought home from his boat. Maybe he thought it was something that might come in handy like as a fishing rod case.

Jeff, those dimensions are about right. Sounds like it's a 50 cal spare barrel cover. I wonder if it came back from his time in Ron 23 or 15 ?
