Charlie,

Colin says he has been attributing it to Ermal R. Welsch, Squadron 29 in the ETO. Does this help?

Ron 29 consisting of PT's 552-563 operated in the Mediterranean in 1944. Don't recall the nick names of all these craft, but they were named after cartoonist Al Capp's, Dog Patch characters in the Lil Abner comic strip. The Ron 29 Insignia featured Lil Abner surfing on a torpedo. Hope this helps.

James,
Found a Ermal Robert Welsch born 3-22-1921 near Lafayette Indiana Died 7-20-2003 in Des Moines Iowa. Had an obituary posted in the Des Moines Register 7-23-2003 but sadly they don't have any obit posted electronically prior to 2006. Maybe someone in Iowa can visit the Register morgue to see if there is better info. Found this info on Ancestry.com but no info on military service. Hope this helps narrow your search.

There is an Ermal R Welsch that graduated with the Midshipman class of September 1943 at Notre Dame. He was from Wolcott, Ind. Wabash College, class of 1943.

Now we're starting to whittle things down.

Well, I've check all my MTBSTC officer rosters for the time period after September 1943 and Ermal Welsch does not show up on any of the lists.

Interesting, Here is a listing from find-a-grave, but listed as Robert E Welsch...but everything else fits.

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=WEL&GSpartial=1&GSbyrel=all&GSst=17&GScntry=4&GSsr=7281&GRid=71309615&

I did find that an Ermal R Welsch was an instructor (or something) at Indiana U and married a Alice Mae Hirt on Feb 3, 1949.

Wrote this book in 1948 "The Psychosomatic Approach in Management of the Worker Accident Problem".
