I've been struggling with how to best show the torpedo body correctly. In looking at a lot of photos, it looks like there was quite a bit of variation. I knew the warheads varied in color and decided to show the "fish" on my model in a mix of colors.

Due to a minor mishap, I had to repaint one of the torpedoes so I did some experimenting. From inputs from members of this board I know the bodies were steel and were often coated with a grease or coating that darkened them and also, in some cases, gave a yellowish tint. This one looks pretty pristene:

What are your opinions on the various torpedoes and colors?
Thanks,
Ed
ps, if it is wrong, please let me know. I can take it. I would rather find out now than after if is all finished. I really want everything on this model to be plausable.

Ed,

You have the metallics down pat!! Personally I don't like the light warheads, stands out too much against the camo. (just a matter of taste, not reality based) I don't think I would go for 4 completely different fish on one boat. Not that it wouldn't have happened more often than not, but it looks contrived. Did you notice the detailing in the Eduard's set for the roll off racks? Probably would be easy to replicate.

Come to think of it I would probably go with Black. I like Dark Red but I'm not sure how accurate that would be.

The grey is actually darker than it looks in the photos. I think the flash accentuate it. I have a color photo of a boat in 31/5P with the torpedoes painted the boat colors. The B&W photo I have of the 495 shows one dark and one light torpedo. Can't see the other 2. Also, I've not weathered the warheads so they will be darker when finished.
So, you think the bodies look OK?

I already modified the kit racks by cutting oof the lower face plate thing, reshaping the base. I replaced the round bar at the top inboard side with a bigger bar that extends further out and has flanges on the ends to help retain the torpedo securing cables.

The White tipped warheads are a bit too flashy and a bit too bright. The green warheads look best, although I have seen many boats with many different colors of warheads. White is ok, but more of a dull toned or very flat white looks best. For the cammo color of your boat, I would stick with the green. It lends itself to the overall scheme of things. As far as the bodies of the torpedoes, I think what you have looks AOK. Sometimes when you try too hard for that special look, you will continue to change things until you find yourself a total mess or you have messed up the project. Remember, every PT Boat was different from the torpedo's to the cammo, to the paint, guns, everything. It is pretty impossible to mess things up unless you paint the darn thing yellow. If you are close to what it looked like, leave it alone and call it a day. You will build many other PT Boats, I am sure. Stop knocking yourself out............

Don't know how much you intend to weather the boat, but those fish, like everything else on board, were exposed to some pretty harsh elements. "Factory Fresh" is one thing --- "Out In The Area" is obviously another.

The light warheads are Haze grey. The flash makes them look whiter. On top of that, once the boat is weathered everything will be darker because of the washes, etc.

I just want to make sure that nothing looked totally wrong before taking the next step.
Thanks,
Ed

Kurt,
For the torpedoes I sprayed the bodies with MM Steel non-buffing metalizer and then put several nice coats of the metalizer sealer over it. Then I made a wash of flat black and paint thinner. By playing with it I was able to get the look I wanted. You could also use water color. Then I added a drop or 2 of yellow food coloring to a paint cup worth of Future. You can build up the level of yellow you want by adding additional layers or adding more food coloring. It works well for props too. You can get different effects depending upon the base color and layers of Future.

The 3 dark-bodied torpedoes in my photos have more black over the silver than the 4th. The props on those 3 are the steel color with just yellowed Furture, no black.

ED;
THE MUSEUM COLOR PHOTO OF THE MK. XIII LOOKS TO BE PRESERVED WITH CLEAR COATS OF VARNISH AS IS THE ALUMINUM NOSE OF THE SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS IN THE "SMITH".
SECOND GUESSING OLD B&W PHOTOS FROM THE '40'S CAN BE VERY TRICKY. COLORED FILTERS WERE USED TO CAPTURE SOME SPECIAL EFFECTS AND ACCENT PARTICULAR SUBJECTS. IF THE PHOTOGRAPHERS WERE "OLD PRO' S", THEN THEY WOULD USE THIS IN THEIR WORK. BLUE FILTERS WOULD WASH OUT THE SKY DETAIL AND TURN RED TO BLACK, YELLOW TO DARK GRAY. RED FILTERS WOULD TURN THE SKY BLACK AND RENDER WHITE, YELLOW AND RED TO A NEUTRAL GRAY.
JUST A THOUGHT ON YOUR BOAT. TORPEDO RUDDERS ARE VERTICAL AND ELEVATORS ARE HORIZONTAL. OTHER THAN THAT, OUTSTANDING JOB!
STEVE
