I was just looking at this cover from Naval History... many details of the boat are very correct, some not so much!
How many instances of, err, artistic license can you find with the boat image? (really not so many... more examples of very correct details could be cited)...

Second series cockpit, bow dips too far down, insufficient flare in hull sides, torpedo tubes have 18" style forward cradle, cockpit too far forward, Lewis guns disproportionate.

I have to ask myself, why is it so important to knock or disrespect someone's work. We all realize that there are those on this message board that have a problem with just about everything done on PT BOATS, but really, if this was my painting I would be pretty upset that someone felt the need to put it up on a message board so that it could be attacked.. The day that anyone of us can look in the mirror and think we are perfect, is the day we can all walk on water.

Not intended as an attack, Frank, sorry if it came across as such. Merely a quiz amongst us detail spotters who respect the craft and the crews, and like to get it right. BTW, I liked the image enough to go find a used copy of the magazine, I'd love to have a big print of this too! The artist of "Breaking Out" is Tom Freeman.
Some of the little details which are quite right, and which show that the artist was paying attention:
> Direction of planking, just visible on port side;
> Multiple lengths of openings in the bow toe rails;
> Bow fairlead shape;
> And numerous other little things.
I think the wheelhouse fairly shows a first series shape with its flat front face, except for the split middle window...should be a single pane there.
The turrets are pushed forward, Higgins style... possibly to avoid obscuring them with the embarking passengers?

I guess I took it wrong, but to me it is not the right thing to do. I have seen many photos of people's work on this board over the years, and although not the best, I never attack their work,, so let's just let it slide. Ted, I tried to walk on water once, but ended up pretty wet. By the way, I just contacted Freeman to see if this print is still available, so when I find out I will let you know. My Wife bought this print for me as a gift many years ago, and I still never framed it yet..

I think that someone who can capture a moment in time the way Tom can is amazing. Of course there will always be some inaccuracies that only an OCD model builder like myself or my fellow historians here will surely find. But for what it is, they sure look great on my wall and way better than on a magazine cover.
The last painting still needs to be framed but I have run out of wall space for the moment. This one I had Skipper Bud and Welford West from PT 157 sign. Sorry Dick, I think I might have to remove one of your many outstanding CAD drawings on my wall to open up a little more room to share with Tom.

As a Duly Initiated Genuine Chief Petty Officer,
I have not been able to walk directly on the water,
I find it works better if you walk just slightly above the surface of the water, yet never actually touching it.
