Hi Jerry, Jeff,
I have seen on the board photos of the 617 after they had stripped the planking off her, just wondering if the person who posted those photos would have the link so that the intermediates might be seen?
Also in Franks photos they do not appear between the ribs so maybe this is a 300 series boat? The Detail and Special Specifications for Building Motor torpedo Boats PT 565-624 does not seem to list them, maybe they were added during construction of the later boats after the Specifications were written?
Just my two cents worth.

I don't know David, but those heavier intermediates seem to be only in one particular area. The ones with the wider fill/narrower cap look like they follow those shown on the drawing. Maybe the restoration crew added them for strength? Check out these other PT 617 interior shots:

Hi Jeff,
Great photos interesting the second last one shows the change of construction from large filler piece with a smaller support to the larger support.
Are all of these from the 617 and your earlier B/W photo was it also from the 617 or another Boat?
By the way thanks for the email however the drawing arrived looking like something Picaso did !!! something in the translation?
Frank,
Do you know which number Boat the intermediates started to be fitted?

Hi Jeff,
Just a little musing on my part by adding these intermediats to the areas within the rib spaces it would appear that someone had been given the job of adding strength to this area, thus it follows that a problem in this area had appeared and this was Elcos solution !
It is interesting to note that when they build todays high speed? Military hulls out of aluminium they fit a very close style of ribbing and lengthwise supports to strengthen the hull plating, down to around 12" squares at some points, might we be seeing that Elco had to upgrade the later Boats to this strength factor due to operational stress on the hulls?
Or maybe the hulls should have been thus built in the first place, but they were learning on the run as it were, that large heavy fast Military boats needed a different approach to design than the sports craft that the Elco started from.
Just my two cents worth at midnight no less !!!

Hi Jeff,
How about the Engine room and the fuel tanks from the interior drawings, Oh and the centre section between the fore peak and the drop table, with these I can stich them together for a fair sized plan!
Sorry its late and the wife just left to take our daughter to the hospital leaving her husband with the kids and me with the computer!
By the way I did notice that the drawing header you posted was for the 314-367 series boats, is that off the Plan you are posting or another?

The color shots are of the restored 617. The B&Ws are of an unknown boat.

It seems odd to me to add them to just that one area, unless it was bracing for a gun mount.

The cabin arrangement and bulkhead drawings are for PT 103-196 & 314-367, the hull inboard profile drawing (showing the intermediates) lists all 80' boats.
