With the help of Al Ross, a few more changes were required to get the Italeri kit closer to the 495 in late '44. Al pointed out that the engine access trunk was the late, wide style and that my boat would have had the narrower one. While I was it, I corrected the hatch deadlight by filing it off and framing it once O made the hole in the hatch.

In looking at the photos I realized the 495 (and others in the series, had a different pedestol for the 40mm than the 596 did. Al sent me a photo of the "Army" mount and I cut down the kit's piece and made one closer to Al's photo. I also removed the railings at the rear of the 40mm platform. Photos of the 490, 491 and 493 show no railings or depression rail so they had to go.

Lastly, I made a new 40mm ammo locker to better match size and shape of the ones in the photos.

I've started a new album because the original was getting pretty big. Here are a series of photos i took today. As you can see, I still need to paint the mufflers and add details like the bull-nose, etc.

LOL, so far you've rebuilt her about three times! Each time she gets sweeter and sweeter. How do you blend you paint patches in so well? You can never see a hint of them, and these camaras are so unforgiving.

It helps that very little is glued together yet. The deck is only screwed to the hull. Everything on the deck is just sitting in place for photos. For the major repaint I stripped the old paint off using a degreaser from Walmart. Just soak in it for 3 hours or so and the paint slides off in sheets. no damage to the plastic.

Maybe backdating a PT boats as my first ship model wasn't a great idea but it sure has been fun and informative. I've met some great people on this board too.

Why wasn't it a great idea? Hope you stick around a while. There are a lot of variations on this tub. I am making mine as a Ron 29 boat, which is a little backdating. You're working out many of my problems for me. Keep up the good work. But when I'm done I want to make another as the real early runs. Hopefully Italeri or someone else will come out with some of the other types too. I like the earlier boats, before they became gun platforms.

I've been thinking of building one of the PT-109 kits. WEM makes a great PE set. My wife would kill me if I had to find another place for another 1/35 boat.

I'll be glad to help if I can on your build. I forget, which particular boat are you modeling?

I am building 562 of RON 29 in the med, she was one of the Thayer blue boats, nothing fancy. So far I've just extend the toerails back, I want to show a little of the interior through the open hatches. I have to make an airfoil for the chart house. So far I can't find a pic of the actual attachment, but Al has given me a pretty good description of it. It only has a 20mm on the bow, and a 40 on the stern (although there is a possibility it had a 40 up front too). The aft torpedoes have to be moved further back. The throttle is mounted portside. That's as much as I know so far. A thought, do you think the helmets would be a navy gray or painted the same as the boat. I want to have several laying around. I might try my hand at a few life jackets, from epoxy putty. Need a little ambiance.

I've got a handfull of helmets and was going to make the OD with a few grey. Not sure what was correct on that side of the pond. If i was forced to quess, I would use grey.

According to Al, the wide engine trunk was used starting about boat 565. Cutting parts 19D and 20D are not hard and add a little variation to the boat but your's is so close I guess, who is to say if the wide one was used or not?

The same goes for the base mount for the 40mm. The faceted one in the kit started around the same boat number but Al says it might have been earlier.

I'll look through my books and photos to see if I have anything that shows the airfoil mount.

What did you make the engine trunk then, about 54 inches wide? The pictures I have are too far away to compare the ready box to the engine hatch width.

Al told me to cut it down to just a bit wider than the hatch. I left about 1/16 on each side. Looks close enough for me.
