Hi all,
I just watched a 1943 movie called Crash Dive staring Tyrone Power, Anne Baxter, and Dana Andrews. I had a vague recollection of this movie from when I was a kid but never saw it in color. It starts with 78' Elco's chasing and sinking a Germany U-Boat with her depth charges. Then it turns into a submarine movie and love story. There's lots of amazing footage of naval vessels including 4 stack destroyers and Mackeral class submarines. At the end of the movie is a very patriotic salute to the US Navy and a reminder to buy war bonds in this theatre. Highly recommend it and it's available on Netflix.

Ahoy there.
Just watched a few minutes of it on the Tube and there's some really beautiful footage of the Early Elco boats running ar speed where you can see them paning.
Cheers from Peter

I recall the movie from many years ago. It seemed strange to mix PT boats with submarines. The PT boat sequences were enjoyable. The movie is actually on Netflix DVD and is not available on the simple Netflix. |

"Crash Dive" does have some good --if brief -- color footage of second-series 77' Elcos running at sea at the beginning and (briefer still) at the end.
I asked Al Ross what color Measure they were painted in some time ago, but I can't remember his answer.
T.Garth had some excellent screen captures of the 77-footers from this film on his website.

He got them from me some time ago. I have dozens of captures of these boat scenes on the hard drive. They are all in BMP format. I'll try to convert to JPG and post a few when I get some time. My opinion is those Ron 4 boats were in Measure 21 Navy Blue. The color shows well in several shots. Also have nice torpedo shots and a few great shots of a four piper in measure 12 mod.

Mike;
You are correct, They are RON 4(PT 62-68) I think, if I remember, there are 4 boats on the film. With numbers removed. PT 62 had a different style of gun shielding/depression shielding, it was flat faced, not the usual 77' Elco shielding. So, at this stage of her life, she is easily identifiable.
Take care,

Here is the PT Boat clip from the movie Crash Dive. It has been edited to exclude most of the non-essential, non-pt boat material.

Dick thanks so much. I remember that movie from years ago, so seeing the clip was awesome. It just gives me chills, some of those shots would make for some wonderful still shots if you can get them...............
