Hi guys.
when the pt boats were repainted in the field were they dry docked or painted when they were still in the water. reason i ask is that i usually like to put my finnished models on diorama's. My idea for my latest is too have it in the process of being repainted. any input would be great Thanks

All boats that were to have their hulls painted needed to be scrapped first, so they had to come out of the water. Portable dry docks made their way onto the bases making things easier for the base Force. Tenders as you know could lift a boat out of the water. I had always wanted to have a diorama featuring a Tender with several other boats around her, with maybe one boat being lifted, but even at 1/72 scale, the diorama would be pretty large. Putting your boat into a portable dry dock would be nice. It would of course be your choice on how you want to display her. You would have to have it being just painted and completed, or being worked on. In the worked on choice, her bottom would be very dull and you woould need to show it partially painted or in the scrapped mode.

Hi thanks for the information that's given me some idea's as to what i shall do with my boat when finnished. I'm making the italeri PT596 but I'm backdating it to the 103 series. I'm going to paint it in the zebra scheme & wasn't sure how this was painted. drydock or still in the water.
Thanks again

There's an excellent photo of an 80' Elco boat with the early "beehive" radar in a floating drydock on Gene Kirkland's great PT Boat website.

You can find it under the "PT Boat Photographs" heading, in the "Scenes at Morobe, New Guinea" section.
