A minor detail I found interesting. According to the 1942 Navy Department reference found here: http://www.history.navy.mil/books/nnv/dh.htm, the term deadlight doesn't mean what is commonly supposed:
DEADLIGHT
Applied to a port lid or cover; a metal shutter fitted to protect the glass in a fixed or port light. Often incorrectly applied to a fixed light in a deck, bulkhead or shell.
Since Elco drawings label them dead lights, I won't change the term on my site's page regarding them but I'll add a note about the above definition.
