how were birthdays celebrated during the war when you were in the Pacific Islands? was it even possible to know what day it was?

colleen--my bdm,s were just another day to me.everything went on as usual.occasionallty a pkg might arrive from home and we would share it.i think i made a xcake for one of tyhe guys.did not take long to finish it up.
my dad passed on while i was there.the chaplain called me up to his tent and told me about it.we said a prayer but they would not let me go home. i was able to sack out for a couple hours and then went on regular patrol thet night/

wow - they wouldnt give you leave for your father's funeral...that is sad. I am sure your mother would have had an easier time if you had been there.
When my uncle on PT 300 died, my father, who was also in the Pacific area, was eventually given bereavement leave for a month. I often wonder how he found out about his brother's death. It is a good thing he got leave when he did as his unit was shipped out to IwoJima or some other monstrous battle while he was on leave.
