Greetings all,
Last night I learned that I won first place in the IPMS National competition with my 1/350 scale PT-505 build in the Best Ship Diorama category. I thought I would share it with you. I was fortunate enough to have a great story to tell. Thanks to Mr. Frank and Denny White for providing the inspiration.
Something I did with this build is create a story book on my Mac in iPhoto. I think it really helped me tell the story of the life event and how the model came together.
I was very honored to tell this story and win an award for my little project.
Dave

Thanks guys,
I hope to be returning the model to the VA next week and sharing the news on the contest with Mr. Frank and Denny White, who introduced me to Mr. Frank.
I can't imagine doing this diorama in 1/35 scale. It would be about 8' square! But I am moving forward with the 105 model ever after hearing of Mr. Iles passing.
I posted photos of this build before but it's easy enough to post them here again so here are the building pictures one more time...
The basic kit parts. The PT Boat was built by a friend who donated them to the project. I could have done it myself but it saved me a lot of work and the quality of the casting and updating from a 103 class was excellent for this scale. The LCM is from L'Arsenal USA. It is 3D printed and very high quality. I was very fortunate that somebody had made these in the right scale.
Lots of scratch parts were added.
Lots of plastic and brass parts were scratch built and added. I actually found tapered brass antenna for the aerial. The photoetch set for the PT Boat was included with the White Ensign Models kit. The base was made from construction high density construction foam. Great stuff because it's solid and you can shape it easily. Below the 505 mostly completed.
Here are the LCM's. Beautiful castings and they went together just great. Here is the salvage LCM with dewatering pumps and hoses in place.
Some finished views of the diorama...
The inspiration photo...
If I can answer any questions let me know.
Thanks again guys!
Dave

Sweet David, and made even sweeter with the win going to a PT! I've pasted a virtual gold star on your forehead.
