Woops Frank, didn't mean to take anything away from the Men of the Submarine Service they did the best they could with what the Navy could give them, and just like the Men that manned the PT Boats they did above and beyond, taking the fight right up to the Japs doorstep when needed!

However it is a sad fact that in many if not all of the Allied countries the tools needed were sadly lacking at the beginning of the war, and only with the information that the equipment ( of all types ) that was being given to many an Allied countries fighting men needed to be looked at in the light of battle experience (wear the failure of said equipment became apparent) did those nations start something that would get him better equipment that would get the job done.

That being said to many good Men from all the Allied Nations paid the price for the actions of a few that during the years leading up to WW11 restricted the military due to spending restrictions applied because the World was at peace!

IE; they had the blinders on when it came to the Military build up by the Axis countries

The Axis Nations on the other hand were well aware that the Allied Nations were not ready for a World War and while it was not the best time for them either they were still at the beginning a lot better prepared.

Just my two cents worth of course.

I dunno, Dave, I sort of like INJ. It sort of has a ring to it.

Actually, that was not an error, but rather a typo I kept making before I figured out how to edit a message on this forum. I did meant to type IJN, but the fingers had other ideas. I screw up "the" as "teh" all the time too.

But Imperial Navy of Japan kinda works, doesn't it? :-)

It is also interesting to know that the problem of the Torpedos failing to detonate was of such note that there was a movie made of the problem and the attempts to get the Navy to understand that they were not working .

This movie also included an attempt to torpedo (witch failed) a Jap ship or two by Submarine.

Anyway I find it interesting that such a Movie made it past the censors on such a touchy subject.

John Wayne starred I think.

I have it in my DVD stack The movie was called Operation Pacific, with the Duke, Ward Bond and Patricia Neal. Copyright 1951, so no wartime censor issue. They simplified the extent of the torpedo defects in the movie, but you get the picture.

Thanks Michael even in 1951 I bet someone got hot under the collar that the Torpedo problem was allowed to be aired. However to many men had come back from the early days of the war with their stories of equipment problems so I guess the Military by then were willing to let it go.

Thanks for the name of the Movie and who starred in it.

Yours
