Does anyone know if PT 156 retained a red hull bottom after being repainted green? This would be late in the war, pre 40 mm stern mount. Also, did the 156 numerals have a black surround or were they just white? Almost read ready to start construction.

I see both drop-shadow and plain numbers, depending on when the photos were taken and what part of the boat they appeared on.

Plus some other random insignia, again depending on the time frame.

Thanks for responding, guys! I am thinking 1943, during the New Guiana campaign. I am still looking to do the 156 with the quad .50 cal Maxon mount on the stern in 1/35 scale. I already have Italeri's PT 596, PT 109, PT Conversion kit, and the Dragon Maxon mount.. I am itching to get started. Any thoughts on the red hull bottom? I am leaning towards all green.

Why? Bottom paints are designed to kill marine growth, the existance of which on a hull bottom produces drag. Drag decreases hull speed and increases fuel consumption. On wooden structures, marine growth weakens the structure as the animals eat into the wood., Bottom paints like Coperoyd contain large amounts of copper, which is a poison for marine growth. Based on allowance lists, copper- based paints were the standard bottom paint for PTs throughout the war.
