Ahoy there.
Thanks to all for the help.
I'm going to work with the idea that a mallet would have been kept near to hand at each torpedo tube. I think the mallets will make a nice bit of extra detail on a model.

Interesting discovery on the mallet. To add to it here's a picture from the Ken Prescott collection. Mallet with same loop on the end as seen in the earlier picture with a long rope attached. Looks like I'll be modeling mallets now. :-)
By the way I've also seen a tool attached to the chain which I'm assuming is used for cleaning or removing the cartridge from the combustion chamber. Shown in the drawing I've seen it in photos as well
I have to wonder if the mallet was at each tube or if they just had one for the purpose of firing the torpedo. The primary method for firing a torpedo had to be from the bridge I would think.

Ahoy there David.
I think that tool might be the one that's used to stop a hot run but need that confirmed by someone with more info than I have.
It's these little details that can really bring a model boat alive and also show us how the entire PT boat weapons platform was used.

I would think there should have been at least two mallets,one for each side of the boat (like the tube training-gear cranks).
In combat, there would have been a torpedoman at each side of the boat, right? It wouldn't have been very effective -- and kind of dicey -- to try to jump around from side to side during torpedo runs with just one mallet...

I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't a mallet for every tube andattached to each tube for safekeeping and availability when needed..
