As many of you have seen, Bob Butler is doing a fantastic job on the recreation of Arthur Frongello's PT-302. I have a few photo's, one that shows Arthur and three of his buddies sitting on the starboard side of the boat. You can clearly see a porthole that was added. I thought there was only one, but in another photo I have it seems that there are two in this location. I don't have a photo of the port side, so I am really not sure if any portholes were there. I put in a message to Arthur to see if he might shed some light. We just want to be correct in the building of the 302. Anyone have any clues as to the portholes.........................

Frank;
Most of the RON 22 boats had portholes under each .50 cal turret and one each side in enginroom area.
PT 308 is the only exception to this, she had two additional portholes in the engineroom area(On another note, she (308) seems to be the only boat, I have found in RON 22 that retained her 1/4inch armor plating for her entire life. The plates were still there, when she was broken up in Delaware. This was located Port and Starboard side of the fuel tank compartment. They were attached with carriage bolts).
Take care,
TED

I can locate one port hole on the port side of the 302, and in another photo it looks as though there are 2 portholes under the turret, I think I sent you that photo Ted.

Portholes were definately a Ron 22 thing. I was told that some were "liberated" from a French shipyard. Obviously one of the boats did it and many followed. Some had them in the wardroom only some crews quarters, some both and also engineroom. I have also seen one pair in the aft store room as it was probably being used for berthing. On the 302 it looks as though wardroom only, placed at the forward part of both officers bunks. The bunks were not directly across from each other. CO's locker aft of bunk and XO's locker forward of bunk. So as a result the portholes are at different locations on each side. On the port side it appears below the cleat. On the stbd it is closer to the turret. Of course they were painted over and could be open while in port or returning to home port, so they would be very easy to model in the closed position.
